Despite the wonky wiring and the non lighting of the 4 trees on the median, but is’nt the plaza in front of the GPO looking really well with the Christmas tree, the crib, the lights, the Spire, etc…..What a great difference to past years!

Gas to think too that these wise and age old trees that bear witness to Irish history were only mere saplings in 1916. Cut them down and chop ’em up….Sure they’ll go towards warming the needy on these cold winters nights. Is’nt that right Ciaran Cuffe and Co…publicity stuntmen, politicians and mentalists masquerading as environmentalists.

Here we go, blood boiling, but I have to say that the DDDA have created a woeful concoction that is the new Dublin Docklands . Peter Coyne and the rest of the suits in the DDDA are developing the most banal assortment of modern city buildings. Check out Custom House Square and the surrounding acres of mediocre office buildings, or are the appartments?, ….coz they look so lifeless. And that 3 stoey limit in height or whatever it is just adds to the forgetfulness of the whole place. Check out the southside quay too, what a non event, the only stand-outish building is the yoke with the pyramid roofs that was recently finished following a plan from a 1980’s/1990’s design. Typically Irish, so pathetic……I’d sack the lot in the DDDA, they are doing far more damage in the long run!

Work is getting under way on the paving on O’Connell Street near O’Connell Bridge…….looks as if it will be continuous and in line with the rest of the previously paved area/foothpath. Who was saying that the paving here would be tapered or something?

I see that the DCC have finally reinstated the missing paving slabs on Henry Street……and the street looks the better of it. Would be good too if they reinstated the shiney silver bins too, keeping the contemporary look to the street!

Ah, we love Galway as well….but looking at Frank McDonalds articles, I realised that Irelands’ so called cities are really only glorified towns, and that includes Dublin too…….. and it looks as if they’ll remain that way too, with low rise suburban sprawl. New architecture in British cities is far more exciting at the moment….everything new here is generally too mediocre. Are architects, councillors etc… lacking in something here…have I thrown down a gauntlet to be proven wrong? Let’s see a bit of flair then!

Eyre Square should look good too when it’s complete.

The City West Hotel interior is a right laugh……something ye’d see in Las Vegas…it’s like a themed hotel….with it’s mock eclectic mix of old styles….pastiche in overdrive….classical plastercast statues, fluted columns, chandeliers, oriental rugs and carpets and mawkish gilded paintings….Woo hoo…..yuck! ……and all in the middle of the sticks. Ye’s should check out the Sheldon Hotel on the Kylemore Road in Ballyfermot too…..more of the same but on a smaller scale and in an working class urban setting.

I saw the article in the Irish Times this morning about Limerick. Jaypers, the photo of the place is n’t very flattering. What a drab looking insignificant place. Check it out.

However, the new hotel at least adds something.

I agree…the Lenehans replacement is a good piece of infill.

Anyone kinda regret initially slagging off Roches Stores makeover, yet now they kinda appreciate it?

With all this rain Cork will resemble Atlantis, let alone Venice, when European City of Culture comes around.

This is a great pity….I hope that the Harry Clarke stained glass window in the Grafton Street premise won’t be damaged.
David Norris and the like are already on the radio reminiscing about the place….ZZZZZzzzzzzz!

They should change their menu to lapdancers, beer and burgers, in good Quaker tradition.

I bet the cafes will continue in some form however…they just need to be revamped and ”sexed up” for a gullible public.

I think you are being sentimental and nostalgic. O’Connell Street is far better now with the new paving, tree planting etc….When the newer trees mature a bit, the same effect will be achieved, but with a coherent and much better urban design. if ye look at that photo, those leafless gnarwled trees are haphazardly planted.

Never let nostalgia get in the way folks, else we’ll have nelson back on the pillar.

Those RTE intros are great with the old landscape icons morphing into modern icons today.
What a great revamp for that part of O’Connell Street, good to see the shops are making an effort too….hope the new paving here is done before Chrimbo.

Ah jaypers if anything I think O’Connell Street would be the ideal location. It is a missed opportunity not to build it here on the premiere street. All held up because of some stupid legal matter, from the Michael Mcdowell brigade. This is a missed opportunity. I think that the Hawkins House location is a bit too secluded in a way. A river frontage would be great too ….could be a showpiece.
I hope, when built, it will not be a mistake and the same problem arises in a few decades time…..but the Abbey was always ridden with ill luck regarding premises.

Hope they get a big noise to design it if thats the case…..and with no parochial nepotism either as we have seen in past.

This is a fiasco, like the much needed National Stadium, and the National Conference Centre, etc….Why are the government foot-dragging and dithering about so much needed facilities? They have oodles of billions of disposable spendable euro and yet won’t commit themselves to spend a cent. The tax revenues/coffers are always abundant. What a mean backward bunch!
I bet the new Abbey Theatre will look insignificant in an insignificant spot, showing insignificant plays and attended by insignificant people. At least, I suppose, it will carry on the tradition of a fiasco that was always the Abbey!

Another loss that was of architectural interest to the city. Notice those flower baskets too around the lamps (and the Ormond Hotel to the left, why the fuck are they gonna knock it!)
Note that, that was during our impoverished Catholic guilt ridden backward times.
