Was at the match at Lansdowne on Saturday and headed over to the Point Depot for the Queen concert afterwards. The amount of new development going on in the docks and surrounding areas is amazing. Cranes everywhere. Saw the gasometer and it looks kinda snazzy with its shiney new glass skin. This area of the city sure is a changin’ The decrepitness is thankfully vanishing. However there are very few focal points to use as location guides, bar the new appartment block at Charlotte Quay, the said gasometer and the spire of the Church in Ringsend/Irishtown.

Aye …..probably connected to the LUAS electrics. Could be camouflaged by dressing it up as a plinth for another statue.

Would be good too if they removed that large unslightly concrete cube from this part of the median too. Dunno what its there for.

Pity that they ever tampered with the statue in the first place. Why oh why is this always so here in Ireland. Could they just not leave it well alone. There is hardly anything in the country whether it be statue, building, park or street that has’nt been meddled with in some way. In almost all instances something is always subtracted rather than added.

I’d give it a chance and wait till its fully installed before fully commenting. The James Joyce bridge had its critics too, now it’s appreciated. But look at the surrounding areas too in the photographs. It really does’nt do the bridge justice either. Jurys Hotel , Citgroup etc….are desperate edifices. All those cranes and the promise of nothing good, but more of the same.

This is a great shame. O’Connell could be viewed in the same light as Parnell and the present day John Hume…..negotiating for Ireland and the Irish using peaceful methods. Don’t think other countries would do the same regarding their patriotic historical heroes.

(Good to see the plaque unveiled last week to ”The O’ Rahilly” of 1916, on the wall just off Moore Street. Looks very much of the time too).

Regarding the replacement of the O’Connell statue lighting, should the railings that was once there be replaced too in that case?

I agree too about the Indo in general, It’s sort of fluffy tabloid journalism. It’s kinda like TV3’s news coverage to RTE’s or ITV to the BBC…if to make a comparison. The Irish Times is much better with Frank McDonald & Co.

I agree! These American or British sounding placenames are usually really awful and inappropriate! Anyone have any suggestions for an alternative?

How about ”the Backers” ……our colloqial name for the fields that were once here!
(The fields were at the back of the Ballyfermot/Cherry Orchard housing estate)

Was in Bennigans pub of Park West yesterday……Temple Bar and IFSC comes to the suburbs of Dublin.

Saw too on the paper that Mother Redcaps will be facing the demolition balls soon after it was sold for 11 million euro. Appartments are planned. Pity, as it has to be one of the last old survivng buildings in the area off High Street. An Taisce are very quiet about it too with it’s Tailors Hall HQ just around the corner. This whole area was once a surface level car park after all its historical building stock was demolished for road widening, aka dual carriageway. It has witnessed rejuvenation in the past few years but pity the new developments comprise of a 6 storey mock Dutch gable stye appartment block which looks rediculous. Gas too that the article in the Irish Times Property section describes Mother Redcaps as being in the historic part of Dublin. Its not that historic if all its old building stock is demolished and lost forever.

There are too many lamps on the street which makes it rathered cluttered I suppose. There is one about every 30 feet. The vertical thrust of the Spire adds to it. I agree however, when the trees fill out they will soften the harsh effect.

The Parnell monument/statue is being encased in scaffolding too for a makeover like Danny O’ Connell’s ….hope there will be a notable difference after the cleaning work.

I’d wish they’d ever get on with developing Lansdowne Road now. The GAA have done their bit. Thicky imbecile Bertie waffling on about his reservations about Lansdowne Road does’nt help. A multi purpose stadium catering for field sports, athletics, etc… could be built in Abbotstown then. But first things first, get on with developing Lansdowne Road!

Ah jaypers what are the councils or whoever is responsible up to, to allow this to happen. My jasus…the ”mullioned” type church window above is a laugh. This has to stop. The dopey ignorant thick local councils and councillors have to be blamed. Whats left of our old architectural stock is still continuously being ruined.
