ParticipantTo correct this problem, a kerb should be simply re-instated at the Spire, which would require no major work.

Participant6 floors would be the best option for this enclosed claustrophobic location.

ParticipantHollywood movies are crass, hope future generations don’t view them as correct historical re-enactments.
(I think Kenneth Branagh would be more of a lookalike to play Collins and Liam Neeson would have been more apt for playing Dev.)GregF
ParticipantThe library in the ILAC is very shoddy too, it was state of the art when it opened 20 years ago but it is seriously outdated now. How about the Corpo building a new libo on a seperate site as suggest already.

ParticipantThomas Street/James’ Street are great Dublin thouraghfares reeking with history, ie, Guinness’s Brewery, Robert Emmet’s rebellion and subsequent hanging, St. Augustines and St. Johns Church, the former Jameson distillery now the NCAD etc,…. Too bad that they are a rather neglected part of the city, especially as they are an important tourist route. However, at the other end of the street I notced that two adjacent buildings have been somewhat reinstated/restored, but overall a more extensive approach is needed to turnaround this sadly neglected street. The demolition of the above mentioned building is an act of vandalism.

ParticipantYep …I worked on Madison Avenue in NY in the 80s and on the building of Canada House in London around the same time. The panoramic views of the cities and surrounding landscapes were great and I realised there and then that we Irish come from a land of leprecauns with vertigo.

Participanthere ya go…………..http://www.irish-architecture.com/news/2005/000163.html
(Think of the scheme we have in phibsboro folks and all those 1960’s inner city developments in Britain.)

ParticipantAnyone see the proposal for the Point Depot area which includes a tower. Although I am in favour of this proposal, the higher the tower the better too , but it looks like something they built in 1960’s England. We are about 50 years behind in architecture. We are getting rudimentary office appartment blocks now while the rest of the world get gherkin shaped buildings and all sorts of organic forms.
(I think the scheme is designed by that fine bunch of accountants Scott Tallon Walker, hence the lack of style and flair.)

ParticipantThis is typical of the interfering and meddling councils/builders who cant leave well alone. There is nothing left in the city or country that hasn’t been tampered with, having its original features altered or removed.

ParticipantThe architect should be sued for this thing if he or she is still alive…….its f*cking awful…no doubt it was influenced by the Abbey Theatre.
How they could see this thing as an improverment to the area is beyond belief.GregF
ParticipantBoth concoctions in the photo……the tower on th right and the cube on the left.
Lets say when the Custom House was first built in an empty environment it had a good aesthetic impact . These newer buildings don’t have that certain appeal…..given too that the tower has height.

This is a terrible concoction…….if it looks as bad as that in the render it would really look awful if it were built.

ParticipantI saw the rendered image of the proposal. Although the rendering is good, the building itself is nothing to write home about. It looks as if it will only occupy one end of the the site nearby the exposed gable end of the older existing buildings, giving an overall lobsided effect. The remaing area will be paved with the newer pastiche buildings of Dublin Castle to the right visible from Dame Street. Some symmetry would be the order of the day here considering the classical buildings to the left and right. I think this new building will already look dated in about 10 years time.

ParticipantHowever work is really moving along at a fast pace compared to the rate it took the last section to be done, and no doubt the taxi drivers would be up in arms if they were waiting too long for their rank to be finished.

ParticipantI think the DDDA might be realizing how shite and unimpressive the overall impact of the Dublin docks is. In the Irish Times this morning there is a report saying that they intend to raise the height of a proposed tower to 100 metres down nearby the Point Depot. This is to give a gateway effect with the proposed U2 tower across the way at Britain quay which has been raised in height to 100 metres as well. Exciting stuff!

Dont forget too that there was a window tax in such times.

ParticipantThe Ormond should’nt be demolished….it’s facade should be at least retained. This is an act of vandalism. The new replacement looks awful. The integrity of this part of the quays will be lost. Jimmy Joyce is rolling in his grave.

ParticipantI hope they keep the placque there to Thomas Barnado who was born in a building that once occupied the site years ago. He’s famous for promoting the cause of childrens welfare and was also an Orangeman.

ParticipantHas that river taxi service for the Liffey started yet?

ParticipantI don’t mean to sound snobbish but I think Ireland has to have one of the highest rates of socially dysfunctional people in Europe.
