ParticipantHorace O’Rourke’s terrace looks great alright. These substantial buildings have an air of London or Paris about them.
I hope they leave the interior of the Savoy well alone now…….why oh why they always have to pull and drag.

ParticipantA good thing about postmodernism was that it help spawn a renewed respect for old buildings. Up until then Modernism saw the destruction of many an old town and classical gem.

ParticipantWho are the DDDA fooling ….this looks so modest, so dismal! The 1980’s Canary Wharf leaves it in the shade.
GregF
ParticipantMy god, those builds planned for Spencer Dock look atrocious in the image. That can hardly be how the finished scheme will look. It’s just more of the the same Scott Tallon Walker shit that blights the docks already. Surely the DDDA did’nt approve of this. Canary Wharf that was built in London in the 1980’s is a far superiour development! We are so behind in the times.

ParticipantThe forerunner of the Spire!

ParticipantAh the Dublin Docks. Good photo of the new mundane developments……….it aint no Potsdamer Platz.

ParticipantI thought the same too when I saw the huge hole that was left in the street. I thought those days of such occurences were long gone. No doubt they will be replacing it with something more contemporary and ‘in yer face’ in competion with Roches Stores and Pennys recent makeovers, as well as Arnotts continuous expansion. Just hope that all the shops along the street dont have the same idea, for the street will be ruined. It’s surprising that they got permission for the total demolishment. The facade could have been kept to keep the uniformity of the street.

PDLL, I have had enough of you. You are a drama queen.
Bulldozergirl once managed to block garethace’s 9,000-word monologues by stuffing her thread with pictures 😀 – https://archiseek.com/content/showthread.php?t=2917&highlight=bulldozergirl – so maybe if mostly pictures are put on here PDLL will shut up.
The view of the Quays & Home’s Hotel which appears in the airport.
– an engraving after a drawing by W.H. Bartlett, from Ireland Illustrated, 1831. The bridge is the same one that’s there today!
ctesiphon, there doesn’t seem to be any record of the architect.View from Sean Heuston Bridge before Frank Sherwin Bridge was built – (Sam’s bank about to be hung from its core in the distance).
Gorgeous bridge, but relegated to spare part status when FS Bridge was built beside it in ’82. But I suppose it has had a happy ending as a Luas bridge.Frank Sherwin Bridge.
The quays look superb in that old engraving/print. It is sad to see that this part of the city has badly regressed with time. It needs a major overhaul. What a shite view in the last photo!

ParticipantGreat photos there Graham…..great make over of the ILAC…..it was such a kip. That curved glass window does it for me…..and that new airy bright high ceiling replaces that horrible claustraphobic dingy atmosphere.

ParticipantThat hotel is absolutely brilliant. So kitsch, so OTT, so camp! Bout time we had a little fun with architecture and interior design in Ireland. Fair play to Phillip Treacy, there is more to him than just his extraordinary milliner talents .
GregF
ParticipantThat looks reallly bad, but I’m sure the council have an eye on it.
The trees have been planted on the central median. Its all gradually coming together. Looking great too.
Anyone see the new Christmas lights on Henry Street. A rather modest affair. Sad to see that the old cast iron black bins are still installed. Totally incongruous with the look of the street. Put the silver bins back pleeze!GregF
ParticipantI love the glass cylinder effect of Roches NCC and the way it addresses the river. It is way more arresting than the other NCC’s pictured above. It is a striking contrast to the rudimentary office block shite around it in the docks. I think it will look cool with Calatrava’s second bridge beside it. The blank wall effect of the Abbey Theatre did’nt work because it was within a conventional streetscape. This is somewhat different. I think it has a somewhat monumental effect. Good on old Roche, the grand daddy of Irish architecture, show the young upstart kids a thing or two.
GregF
ParticipantHere’s some more conference centres close to home.
GregF
ParticipantI’ll say these parts of it will be modified as alot of initial plans are. More glass included.

ParticipantThis is great news!
Way much better too than ”Mansfield Giant Heap of Crap”

ParticipantSome great photos there folk!
This area of the city has been neglected for far too long. While it is good to see newer developments finally springing up, it is shocking to see any of the remaining old historic building stock demolished. Bargaintown while spearheading some newer recent developments are one of the major culprits however for not maintaining their older property. The Kings and Queens shop is a tawdry eyesore with those 2 trees plonked in front of it. That petrol station across the river is bloody awful too and should go. Homes Hotel was a priceless jewel in comparison. It’s a pity that there is an abundance of ignorant butchers in Ireland ready to cut and chop, botch and knock.GregF
ParticipantI wish they’d add some sort of an archway as part of the entrance to the Garden of Rememberance….like Stephens Green. It would look far more grand and dignifying than whats there at the moment.
GregF
ParticipantGreat photos Graham! I was thinking the same thing too Anto. It’s the statue of William Smith O’ Brien who is currently on O’Connell Street today. It was moved to its present site in 1927 due to the traffic. What a great place to have a statue at the apex of D’Olier and Westmoreland streets.
O’Connell Street median is nearly finished; trees are ready to go in this week. It looks great too!
GregF
ParticipantYes…..it looks absolute shite (but its probably just a temporary mock up to see how buildings would look in this situation)
