The Smithfield development by Fusano Properties looks grand now that it is finished. The tower is an attractive feature and there is a nice finish to the buildings….ie the cladding etc (especially when ye compare it to the standards of other recent schemes around the city and country). I remember all the wrangling about the height of the tower when the proposal was first mooted. Will be good now when the Summer comes and it fills up with people. Too bad the Chinese New Year festival wasn’t held there this year.

The architects A&D Werjchert seem to be quiet of late or are they doing anything major in the city or country?

Buiding it on that patch of water seems absurd. It would be better if it had more of a Liffey waterfront location. The new location seems rather cramped too. That horrible red brick building in front of it as seen from the Liffey quayside should be demolished so as the new Abbey can be viewed and adored clearly.

I’d have to go with the U2 tower. The image above from that view looks a cumbursome pile plonked on the quayside. It’s not very attractive. The newer rendering of the U2 tower makes it somewhat more elegant, what the building above lacks.

See that the Abbey is to get another 25.7 million from the Arts Council over the next 3 years!
Jasus, with that and a new home, it should most definitely be a success now.

It will be a case of needing a touch up of the Cardinal Red floor polish to keep it so crimson.

The Spire on O’ Connell Street is the the new icon for Dublin City. It will be fully marketed as such when the repaving works are finished I’m sure. Regarding buildings , Liberty Hall would have to be viewed as an icon too; that photo by Fergair on the previous page is the archetypal photo shot of Dublin, with the Liffey in the forground.. Liberty Hall should be given a makeover and restored to it’s original quirky glory. It’s just as good as the stuff they are building further on down the Liffey. It would somewhat of a loss if it were demolished.

(However it’s probably a pity that we did’nt get a miniature Chrysler type building here from an earlier date, as well as the loopline taking a much more distinctive form/shape. )

Has the new red Liffey barge ceased operating already?

Here’s another rendering of the proposed U2 tower.

Those renderings are the business. It’s quite futuristic. This will be superb when completed. About time something like this happened down the docks, and a big international name involved too. More pleeze! The DDA have to be complemented in this case.

This area of the city’s landscape will have a few contemporary and visually striking jewels if they come to fruition. There will be this Libeskind piece, the curved glass roof of the new Lansdowne Road, the glass cylindered NCC and the twisting U2 tower. Quite a good little collection of modern landmarks. Include too the glass covered gasometer, the Point Depot makeover and the proposed new Abbey, whatever form it takes.

The image of what’s proposed looks really cool.

Maybe if they had likened it with the little mermaid in Copenhagen; might have been a better comparison.

Was down this way for a ramble over the Chrimbo period. While it was great to see the rejuvenation of the once derelict docks, the overall impression of the newer buildings was rather pitiful and unimpressive. Those stumpy office buildings, ie Citigroup look a joke. Spencer Dock doesn’t look anything special either. The emerging buildings on Sir John Rogerson’s look more of the same….however the view of the complexes at the Grand Canal Basin/ Charlotte Quay from the bridge at Ringsend looks quite good. The Jeany Johnson and a Viking Longboat moored at the DDA offices are a nice little feature and the new pedestrian bridge looks quite good as well.

The image in the Metro newspaper looks quite good. Kinda a Canary Wharf/New York look about the buildings . Boats/Barges on the river and all. Looks cool.
But when you look closely and see the 2 ESB chimney stacks placed right among the towers. Its kinda a rushed together whimsical photoshop montage just to catch the publics eye. Nothing will come of it.

I think you misunderstood my comments. I said that the proposed developments of the docks was only a carrot that was being used by the government to win over the electorate in a probable election next year. Ye have often heard of the saying of a donkey being led by a carrot and stick? I did’nt refer to yerself in any way other than saying that we don’t need the Brits or such archaic colonial powers to run our country again. God forbid. Improving the all round calibre and interests of our TD’s is the solution and that will happen with time with our new earned immense wealth. TD’s will develop an interest in the arts rather than just the pig stye!

This is only a ”carrot” as there is an election probably next year. This is hypocrtical of the PDs/Fianna Fail advocating high rises for the docks and all sorts of other much needed developments, when McDowell hindered the Natioanl Stadium calling it a Ceascescu stlye complex and Bertie calling Spencer Dock a monstrosity. They are a long time in government and its a last minute rush promising all these things as there is fuck all to show bar roads and houses.

And pleeze we don’t need the Brits to run our country again.

Anyone seen yet the pile of shite erected on the Mater Hospital grounds on the North Circular Road. It’s red brick painted white with timber cladding in places. Looks cheap and awful!

Definitely the Loopline bridge should be remodelled so as to remove the curtain effect and link the two parts of the city. A lighter frame with an arch or something could be applied and light it up at night. Otherwise the new theatre will be isolated down there in suit land. Hope the new theatre will look radical. Employ big noise architects from abroad to design it.

It’s all happening at the mo. Ye’d know we were heading into an election year.

To recap, look at whats been given the go ahead lately……..

    …….all promises, promise
