ParticipantSaturdays events were disgraceful……It was horrific to see the street in ruins.

ParticipantJust looking at the photos nd thought didn’t Postmodernism throw up some really kitsch buildings….kinda Liberace sort of buildings.

ParticipantI think court proceedings should be implemented and the architects prosecuted. This building is an atrocious and unforgiveable crime of epic proportions. The black hat should be the out come for the architects.

ParticipantPull the lot down!

ParticipantWork is well under way for a substantial complex of a hotel and appartments on this site……Dunno it will be 9 storeys…maybe in parts it will….The ”Old Chocolate Factory ” is the termed coined for the complex….sounds Willy Wonka-ish.

ParticipantI hope the 1916 Memorial Garden will get a decent makeover…..whats there at the moment is seriously lacking. More features and characteristics of such memorials should be included to make it more of a defining monument for the city…ie if grand archway leading into the garden was added would be a start. The recent memorial gardens that were opened in Washington USA to the war dead of WWII is not bad. It has an air of grandeur and solemnity which is needed in such cases.

Participant….and here’s a statue of Boudicea in London

ParticipantJust to add, regarding such statues, one foot of the horse raised indicated that the rider was injured in battle, two feet raised indicated that the rider was killed in battle and four feet firmly on the ground indicated the rider died in his bed or natural causes.

ParticipantI remember someone mentioned on this post that O’Connell Street is rather bare regarding statues up near the Gresham Hotel end. Who could we put here to fill the gaps and to add a certain grandeur to the newly refurbished street. I discovered I have this penchant for equistrian statues and something like the examples below would look cool, although 200 years out of date and out of place. I know too that they are always more than likely symbols of colonialism, conquered peoples, war victories and national myths. But I thought who could we prop up on a horse besides Eddie Macken and Ruby Walsh. How about Brian Boru; the Celts were masters of the horse, and he could become somewhat of a more prominent national hero figure. Would be a great tourist attraction for the street; sounds bonkers too I suppose.

ParticipantOnly 170….that all?………fuck them all ……..just build it.

ParticipantIt’s great that this has been hilighted…..good one Devin and Graham. Looks as if apprentices of the Anco school of slab laying or should that be slab slaying were responsible. The foothpaths look a fecking mess and that diagonal cut in the slab looks really atrocious as has been pointed out.

ParticipantIt was a good programme. But on refection it didn’t show too much of his built work, bar his house, Busaras, the horrible Abbey Theatre and a modest little church. Busaras was really radical and futuristic for its time. Not only did it make the surroundings look extremely dated but even the quirky old buses too.

ParticipantYep, O’Connell Street is looking great. It will look superb when finished. I will forever remember the cheap publicity seeking Green Party plonkers chained to the gnarled old trees holding up the works at the begining. I see the GPO’s portico is still shrouded in scaffolding. May as well leave it up, till after the cranky nordy Billy Boys Orange protest march at the end of the month. Will protect the building somewhat. There may be some trouble and I know they would just love to put the windows of the GPO in or cause some mark of damage to probably the main republican icon of the Irish Republic.

ParticipantGas how there seems to be a willingness to put up all sorts of aerial clutter…pylons, cables, masts, poles, satellite dishes, chimneys etc…. throughout the city, yet when a building over 4 storeys is proposed there is a large hoo-haa about it.
GregF
ParticipantA simpler and more practical idea, why not just dredge the Liffey and clean out the muck and pollution. Clean the remainder of the quay walls. Touch up the bridges again. Be consistant and plant trees in a symmetrical fashion along the quaysides and put fecking boats on the river.
The time in the slime wasn’t a bad concept really, it was just executed very badly.GregF
ParticipantThis looks bloody awful. What happened to the balloon idea at Temple Bar?

ParticipantThat’s a nice rendering of what was proposed. It would be ludicrous if the NCAD were to move out of the city centre. It could be seen as a kinda snobbish act by the board. An almost middle classing of the location of the NCAD. Thomas Street is a superb street with some fine architectural gems and a substantive history. I love this street, even though it’s kinda rather neglected and run down, however, it has great potential. It’s also a great location for student artists to study; plenty of human subject matter with its ”Dirty Dub, salt of the earth” characters, shop keepers, traders, shoppers, immigrants, flat dwellers, winos, horse and wagoneers and the odd street wise dog, etc… Curse on the NCAD board if they move out. Bloody pompous upstarts!
GregF
ParticipantYep Paulh I agree, I think the the Altro Vetro building is quite ugly and unattractive, else the rendering doesn’t do it justice.
