Agree with most everything that has been said. But I think one thing in need of particular attention is the Luas electricity sub-station at the Liffey end of the street. It really is incredibly incongruous and yet, it would have been so simple to even just clad it in timber.
I think the best thing for it now would be an open artist’s competition to transform it into a large open-air installation of some sorts. I’m absolutely convinced this is feasible even if the ESB require entry to it.Actually it could pass as one of English artists Rachel Whiteread’s concrete moulded installations.
The hare sculptors on the street are mad…kinda ‘fun’ pieces. See we brought home from Argentina a statue of Irishman Admiral William Brown the founder of the Argentina navy. Wonder where will they put it.GregF
ParticipantSome good news….I noticed this morning that the lads were finally repairing that hole at the corner of the footpath outside Supermacs!

ParticipantThey could at least retain the facade!i…….(instead of the proposed crappy elevation)
……and after all how is it that the Ormonde gets the go ahead for demolition while across the river there was so much of a furore about the changes made to the Clarence Hotel.

ParticipantAye, alot of the immediate areas outside the shops, ie Easons, etc… are left in an unfinished way and are in a rather substandard condition compared to the new paving. Plonks of cement, etc. This should surely be addressed. Flanagans the restaurent used to have a mosaic of some sorts too.
Will there be a grand opening of the street when the works are all complete, I wonder? Bertie cutting the ribbon etc….It’s all nearly finished, however there is about another month or more of work left before its all fully complete (and considering the way its dragging on …ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

ParticipantI wonder who the jokers were who did this and what was the purpose….Is there a hidden meaning in the name ‘Fr. Pat Noise’…..need the Da Vinci Code breakers here ………Fr.Pat Noise….. aka Patronise. Could be someone taking the piss outta our attitude to our Irish history.

ParticipantJust heard on the news that Bohemians Football Club are to sell their ground in Phibsboro and move to middle class Castleknock where they’ll have a new stadium built.
(Anyone remeber the Sonas centre once planned for here.)GregF
ParticipantWell done Croker and the Cumann Luthcleas Gael mar sin. These games will go ahead, no doubt. The deal was struck between the associations, the windfall for all is substantial and too substantial for the GAA to ignore.

ParticipantAh,…. the ‘Shard of Glass’ as it’s known as, I think. Wouldn’t it look good down the Dublin docks. I have to say again that we are frightingly conservative here in Ireland when compared to our English neighbours when it comes to the arts and in particular, architecture. We blag on about our bubbly pesonalities and the gift of the gab and all that but when it comes to anything radical regarding architecture we are firmly stuck in the bog. It’s kinda shameful really.

ParticipantI’ve said it already , but it looks like something that was built in 1960’s England.

ParticipantIt would be awful if the GPO ceased operating as a post office. Maybe they could include a museum element within the GPO and display items from the 1916 Rising.

ParticipantI have noticed that too…but I reckon the bridge will be revamped when O’Connell Street is finished. The footpath will be widened and paved and the bridge will be repaired and cleaned. Well, at least I hope it is.
O’Connell Street is looking better and better by the day, the trees are beginning to blossom and the greenery is a welcome sight.

ParticipantThis is a great auld museum. It’s rather cluttered, quirky, antiquated Victorian atmosphere is a rarity there days. I’d hate to see them ‘jazz’ it up, or to put it bluntly, allow the botchers to fuck up the interior.
(Although the revamp that the other museums got in recent years are cool.)

ParticipantAye …was just thinking that meself …the clock and lamps are real Art-Deco…..the materials, the colours, the style etc…
GregF
ParticipantGreat shots of the parade. Was there meself and thought it was marvellous. What a great attraction for the city. The tourists there too loved it although they hadn’ta clue what it was all about. Got a good few photos too but not worth posting as they are mainly of the parade.
The finale was the best when the bands combined playing the very catchy Garryowen (a favourites jingle of General Custer too). Pity however that the viewing points for the spectators were hampered. Will they ever get rid of that fencing, it’s everywhere. The people were penned in or hemmed in and the views were very resrictive. I took advantage from McDonalds window.
There were marches and events all over the weeekend in the city which added a wonderful liveliness. There was a pageant of sorts yesterday wity the Labour party paying homage to the workers and the Irish Citizen Army and the Shinners had their day out on Saturday with Gerry himself making an appearance and speech at the GPO.The spin off of the commemoration was that it was truelly great for the city and tourism overall.

ParticipantSaw that on the paper too this morning Rory. It sounds great. This area of the city has been overlooked for years. It has oodles of history which could be exploited more fully. Anyone should take a stroll down Meath Street on a Saturday morning and ye get a sense of what it may have been like in medieval times. It’s a mavellous part of the city with loads of potential.
But I kinda have reservations however about the redevelopment of the vandalized buildings beside Vicar Street. The proposal for this leaves the botched facade of the old building with the newer construction visibly behind as shown in the illustration. Kinda trendy and cool, but will look dated I’d say in years to come.GregF
ParticipantAye, in the last photo the motorbikes belong to the army entourage that escorts the Presidents limo. With ‘an Eiri Amach na Casca 1916’ commemoration it is a great way of imbuing civic pride in people as well as a national pride…..which was kinda lacking for decades. Kinda un-PC nowadays too, to say such things.
GregF
ParticipantWith the mad rush to get more of the work done I hope they don’t make a bollick of it. Just a pity its is not all finished, It has gone on long enough.
GregF
ParticipantCheck out the Internet cafe on Parliament Street. Its painted Double Yellow Line road marking yellow as well as having as having a shitty cheap sign. It’s neighbour is painted Sci-Fi Silver. And this right in front of City Hall.
GregF
ParticipantWhen is the completion date for this again?……..May is it?……I can’t see it being finished on time. Looks as if it will drag on into the Summer months. Too bad as with the Easter Parade coming up as well. Very bad that it was’nt completed alot sooner. The corralled street is very annoying now….and they still have to fix that corner at Middle Abbey Street out side Supermacs.
GregF
ParticipantWas being a bit too generous…..
