I found this http://www.merchantsgate.ie , what do people think? There appears to be one landmark tower of 19 storeys. Anything is bound to be better than the bog standard stuff going up these days. Every time i look out at the docks from the train going into Connolly it always depresses me. It looks like there’s nothing there. Even with all those cranes on the opposite side of the river, there seems to be nothing going up higher than a few floors. So much lost potential as far as i’m concerned, but i know other people feel differently.

A 29 storey building called Obel seems to be planned for the quays in Belfast. It looks impresssive. It’s a pity there nothing similar under construction in Dublin. Does anyone know when work is due to start on Alto Vetro or Montevetro, or the ‘The Park’ in Carrickmines? Thanks

For the most part I like the Spire. I just wish it didn’t look so bloody dirty all the time, It looks particularly awful in dull weather, but spectacular on a bright sunny day. Will someone please clean off those dirty brown streaks !

I wish they would light it up more effectively at night though.

Fair enough, but i’m so sick of nothing ever exciting ever being built because of the views of a conservative minority of people who always seem to get their way.

Anything ‘bold’ is automatically shot down in this country. There are lots of people who would like some well designed tall buildings to be built in Dublin to break the monotony of 5 storey crap that always goes up, and no matter where the tall buildings are proposed it always seems to be in an ‘unsuitable’ location. It really frustrates me.

Looks like work on the tower has begun. There’s huge cranes up by Ballymun, and they seem to be working on the elevator shaft of the main tower building. (just in case anyone’s interested!)

Has anyone appealed the decision of the city council to grant this building permission? Has it been given the all clear to go ahead?

Most of the new RTE dramas etc., or programmes that try to portray Dublin as a modern and happening city always seem to show those ‘pointy hat’ buildings on George’s Quay. Pity there’s feck all else to show. Watch the start of that new BowWow programme on RTE if you get the chance.

Maybe the new station on Tara street will add something new worth looking at on the Dublin ‘skyline’. I think they’re due to start building there this Autumn.

They say 2004/2005 but i wouldn’t hold my breath. Although a few are planned, I don’t think there are any high rises under construction anywhere in the city at the moment.

I’m still waiting (and hoping) that Tara Street and Sir John Rogerson’s Quay get going soon. But I wait and wait and wait . . . .

There are a type of people in this country that will object to almost everything. Anything with height seems to be the most popular. Narrow minded twats with no imagination, and the worst thing is that they always seem to get their way.

Dublin, a city with over one million people, ends up with no exciting architecture as a result, just block after block of boring, monotonous crap. Box after box after box.

Just heard (don’t know if its true) that a 17 storey building is planned for Liffey Valley along with a few other 8-10 storey buildings. I’ll believe it when i see it!

I think I also read somewhere that an application has been made to raise the height of one of the proposed buildings in the new Smithfield development to over 54 metres. Not bad eh? That’s if its approved of course.
