Here’s a bunch more photos. I got excited by the idea of a frickin’ huge crane and hopped on a ten bus.

These are just in a directory, so there are no thumbnails. Click the image name and it loads.

    And that crane is HUGE.

And it seems I can’t get anywhere near the place due to my current work location, and will probably end up with no useful photos at all.

I haven’t really had a good poke around EFS in about two years, so perhaps it’s visiting time again…

Yeah, NASA are the bomb. As far as I know they only have a few Irish photos of Galway or somewhere. The thing to note is that the images are available FREE from the site. You can even download them, make a book of them and then sell it on…

    go NASA!!!

Oceanfree/Mapflow has an excellent mapping tool here:
    http://interactive2.iol.ie/oceanmaps/content/index.asp

Now it may just look like maps, but keep zooming in and it surns into aerial photos. Hurray!!!

    There’s also terraserver:
    http://www.terraserver.com/

It used to have Dublin but my Mac frickin’ hates it these days so I can’t check…

And does anyone have any more aerial photos they want me to scan and upload??? You get your name on the page and lots of links and stuff…

Just to clarify – the papers are actually indoors, behind glass, so I presume moisture is minimised. Terrorism?? Me no quite understand, but I was told the Liberty Ob deck was closed due to suicides/potential suicides (ie, self terrorism). No third party terrorist reasons were mentioned.

Has that photo changed? I find it hard to really discern what they’ll look like, and see no “bendybench”…

Don’t forget that the observation deck on Liberty Hall is used for paper storage.

    Makes you think…

Excellent stuff….but they’ll never do it (though not for lack of good reason).

    Questions:
    1. Given to the Bank of Ireland?? For Free???
    2. Who created the “no parliament here” condition???
    3. Do our politicians actually deserve this??? Perhaps they should all be sent to a converted warehouse off the M-50…

Wow – that was built in 62/64??? I never knew it was that old. It’s aged fantastically!!!

The building only dominates from afar. You don’t really see it until you’re a bridge away on the canal (and the tall houses of Rathmines/Ranelagh block it from other directions).

To continue this theme of deceptively tall buildings, here’s the Central Bank with the ground sloping away from it. Looks short from the south, looks tall from the north.

Cars make cities look ugly. And I’m not being smart – all the colours just don’t match. It’s like having patchwork quilts for roads.

Saw the new metal bits the other day, and I was happy to see them in place rather than disgarded. They’ll have to put chains on them – they were made for chains.

How to get from your car to the green??? Don’t drive into town of course…

I’m too knackered to really type, but I’ll just make a fast point. Lots of arguments against tall building, but I could come up with just as many arguments against small buildings. In fact, I’m living in one of them. This fear of the unknown/fear of screwing it up has left us in a city which is (quite frankly) fairly screwed up. It doesn’t work well as a city, becasue people can’t move, and can’t afford houses. So we don’t go tall, and end up screwed (which we are).

Social problems in tall buildings – social problems have developed in tall buildings, medium buildings and small regular houses. Maybe this is a social thing, and not a building thing.

Students: build tall student flats. Students don’t care about gardening and have no money. I’m sure they’d just rather have money left over from the rent.

Anyway, I’m sicking of seeing more excuses not to do something when the same excuses (or better) could have been used against the flat mess we live in now. that said, you do raise good points, and they would be best applied to the development of a taller city rather than the barring of one.

Hell, not even really tall, but a few more Liberty Halls here and there wouldn’t kill. It beats a two storey house.

I can only presume that they just don’t care. The only hope for Dublin transport is if terrorists take Bertie hostage and threaten to kill him unless he actually makes a meaningful effort to sort this out. If only terrorists were that thoughtful…

So once again – if they’re not going to build a metro, QBC’s everywhere, frequent busses all the time. Let the traffic sit there and work it out while the busses roll by in complete freedom. They won’t make money but we’ll all be really happy.
