Hello again,
I’m with Notjim. Although it does block a view, I feel that it’s an excellent bridge, and will eventually be missed if we take it away.
I’d also like to point out that there are trees along the side of the Liffey that also heavily obstruct the view of the Customs House, and which will only degrade the view further in time.
I think a balanced look at the pros and cons of removing this bridge would have the adverts removed, and the bridge slightly restored. Why would we want to go to all the trouble of moving an entire railway line just to slightly improve a view already partailly obstructed by trees? It just seems a waste of money.

fjpParticipantWhat???
Plumber, you have GOT to be kidding us here. And I think we’ve all been well and truly had. But if you’re actually serious, then I might suggest that the greater danger to society could be eminating from your dangerously paranoid mind.
I really, really, really, really hope you’re kidding.
Yours sincerely,
fjp
fjpParticipantI’ve seen public car parks constructed under public squares in Lyon, France and they worked extremely well. In essence I think it’s good idea, but it does involve tearing up the area completely whilst construction is ongoing.
Personally I feel that it was a good idea, and I don’t see how (if carried out well) it could have affected children in any way. I’d be interested in knowing if the architechts pulled out because of genuine problems with the plan or becasue they felt that they would have been slaughtered by undeserved and illogically based public opinion against the project.

fjpParticipantI used to work in that area (in fact in the very building you’re discussing). Sure, it’s nothing special, but the reference to the cavern club in Liverpool is quite accurate: it’s an important area of Dublin culturally, and will probably only grow in meaning and stature.
The graffiti in the area gives it a very bizzare charm as well, and could almost be compared with the Abbey Road graffiti for the Beatles, but just more colourful (and sometimes nothing to do with U2). I think it’s a nice street, and would gladly live there, graffiti and all.

Although I think the metal work and lighting looks fantastic, I sort of wish that they hadn’t completely replaced all the stone work (and old collection points) at each end of the bridge.
I understand why they did it, and the bridge is certainly easier to access, but it just seems a shame to take away such important features due to congestion.
But the metal work really is fantastic…
