It’s not so much a question of “Vertigo? U2 tower to be taller” as it is “Vertigo? U2 tower to be built?”

Please don’t tell me the President was shunted up Abbey St to the parade?

I think a lot of Dubliners living on the east side of the city would be sad to see the chimneys go. They ARE landmarks for the city..sure Dublin Tourism even have them on postcards :p If/when the powerplant is moved from Poolbeg, running a lift up one of them and having a discreet viewing point build built within the top of one of the chimneys would afford phenomonal views of Dublin.
Also, as has been pointed out before, they are very elegant structures and their slender build, the proportions between their height and the distance between them and the package as a whole indicates that some care went into making them more than mere industrial stacks.

There’s a threeway battle between Centra, Spar and Londis for the soul of the city. I for one just don’t believe that we’re in need of quite this many newsagents. Abbey St is a bit of a breath of fresh air in terms if individual shops. Franchise creep isn’t to be welcomed. We’ve now got a Spar opposite an O’Briens and a Eurosaver. I bet this street will be the location for the first northside Starbucks.

I see Best menswear at the Spire is closing down. Pity, it was one of the few shops on O’Connell Street to fit into the ‘Champs Elysee shops’ vision of the 1998 IAP. What will replace it? If you look at the three adjoining shops Γ’β‚¬β€œ a Carroll’s, an Abrakebabra and a sex shop Γ’β‚¬β€œ the signs are not good. Maybe Spar would consider taking over the lease (shriek!)

I bought a suit there in Novermber, during their closing down sale… if they’re closing down then they are doing it slllooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwllly

Still in the O’Connell ACA, a double-front poundshop recently opened on Abbey Street Lr. Are we winning or losing?

That’s where the very dinky and grandmothery china showrooms used to be πŸ™ Veritas watch out… you might be next.

Suffice to say Gandon hated Stapletonesque faffing about with dinky neoclassicisim – he wanted robust!

I dunno if I would call the Custom House robust.. it’s pretty feminine. It’s counterpart being the butch Four Courts up the river.. but I think everyone here has heard that description of the two.
At the least, the main courtrooms etc and the Rotunda need to be refurbished. The courtrooms are a disgrace and…to be frank, splashing what must be the largest public room in Dublin with dollops of yellowy/magnolia paint does not a refurbishment make..

2010…it’s not that big a bridge.. I thought we were gonna get it soon,
Again, this was in Pat Liddy’s book about a decade ago so how in the name of all that is holy is this not up yet?

Em…people need to see the new Polish Store on Aston Quay. It is jaw droppingly bad. Did you know that the national colours of Poland are red and white? You will once you see it!!!
I’m not kidding, if you were irritated about Centra….

Will they ever illuminate the bloody thing? It’s bizarre at night-time. A 120m sculpture puncturing the skyline and no-one can see it. Reminds me of that tall yoke in Pyongyang.

Have there been any newer pictures than the ones in the Pat Liddy book years ago of the Carlton building all pimped up?

Well thru walkers, to use a hiking reference πŸ˜€ walk past anyway. If there’s a destination midway up the street, like another shopping centre, then people will go there plaza or no. Is the Fingal building for the knock as well?

Would a plaza on Upper O’Connell St not ruin the roofline? I mean, I know it’s been a vacant lot for years, but now that will actually be by design!

I don’t know why they made it so hard to look out of the new walkway.

I would have loved to be able to look out at the old terminal building through big plate glass windows.

As it is now, you can barely see out at all.

It beggars belief. That strip of plastic or whatever it is has been placed precisely at eye level. It’s as if the position is on purpose. I was on the hike recently to the new gates – which are very nice – and it is unbelievable that it’s accidental.

Forgive my use of less than technical language but there’s two stumpy things in the Liffey where the bridge is due to go. That aside, I dunno πŸ˜€

When are we getting this little square? It looks like a very nice proposal but one that I would’ve imagined should be done by now.
