ParticipantIs it time to give up on O’Connell St as a boulevard showpiece? The locals and businesses opening there seem to prefer it as a one-stop shop for tat and crap. There’s always Dame St as the city’s main thoroughfare. It arguably has a greater claim to the title anyway. People visit Dame St!

ParticipantAh, Vienna…. From those two pics above of Stephansplatz, I can tell you that emerging from the U Bahn up those escalators, when you get your first glimpse of the massive West Front of the Stephansdom and its reflection in the Haas House opposite – there’s simply no better way to be introduced to that wonderful city.
Babbling over!

The alternative is that they build a bridge especially for themselves..
Oh. Wait.

You’ve kept the grass, but you’ve put in a moat and a drawbridge?
Am I the only one who can picture the Provost looking at that image and thinking to himself that they may finally have a solution to the pesky Fenian public?

What happened the thingmote? Was this removed at the same time as the WSC changes?
The top was lopped off like one of Gulliver’s eggs and, I believe, used to raise Nassau st above the floodplain of the Liffey. The old St Andrews and now Dublin Tourism building stands atop the hill now.

Participantlol ah, the poor closed and gated front porch of the Four Courts, I’m guessing?
Presumably it’ll be re-opened when all the criminal cases are shunted upsteam – though a barrister who plies his trade in the building thinks differently. You would have a direct line of sight straight through to the Supreme Court chamber, if you had the notion to get up to any divilment :p
‘Tis a nice painting of the man, with the Custom House looming in the background.

ParticipantThe only way that mammoth lunchbox atop the Gresham would fit in would be if the site was bought by Tupperware International.
Ooooh!! It so pretty when it glow at nite… look at the pretty light, moth-people. In the generally washed out, cloudy Dublin daylight, it’s likely to be less dazzling.fergalr
ParticipantLondis will be dismayed. Their invasion of O’Connell st has been checked.
I keep meaning to get a picture of that Polish store on Aston quay. It really has to be seen to be believed.fergalr

The planning application makes reference to No. 37-41a Henry street which are to be demolished (inferred by lack of it saying anything else about them, and saying that everything not otherwise mentioned is to be demolished).
It also says one of the three public squares is on Henry street. So which of these buildings are included in 37-41a to make way for this public square? Why can’t they just use Henry place as their link to Henry street, it’s a tiny distance from O’Connell street to Moore street anyway, another break in this terrace is not needed.
They kept that facade on the river front of our “Italian Quarter” (ha!) as well as opening up that new street to the river so it’s not impossible, no.

ParticipantPhoto in the IT property section shows a Luas going up O’Connell St… Well I guess there’s not harm in making stuff up when you’re mking stuff up :p
Aside from the ludicrous park proposal, it looks to be a very interesting development and, between this and the Arnotts lebensraum, there might be a little bit more relevance to our main thoroughfare once more.fergalr
ParticipantA north-facing public park slap bang in the “trade winds” that bowl across the flat city. I won’t be in the cable car queue. Well, more than once!!

ParticipantA new LUAS bridge is to be used to ease traffic disruption in Dublin city centre during the construction of the Metro North and the interconnector
What does that mean?

ParticipantI doubt the windows will appear as apparently transparent as they are in those photos. And it seems to me that it could end up looking very…corporatey. Pity they couldn’t have made it match a little bit more the lovely yellow brick of the Gaiety. Plus, there’s going to be loom factor ๐

ParticipantI walk up Kildare St most weekdays and to be fair, Graham, the air is mostly blue from the numbers of buses and coaches heaving their way up it. So I’d guess any stonework is likely to get a bit grotty. But it still sticks out like a pearl. During winter mornings they left the lights on in the library on the first floor and it is absolutely stunning, as magnificent as the rare glimpses of Georgian ceilings that you sometimes get in early evenings through the windows.

“Where’ll we put the restaurant?”
“Sure that dome’s empty..”I was told today that Cowen stays in the Merrion when in Dublin, so I can imagine why he mightn’t be happy to move to the Steward’s House. Personally I think there’s more scandal in the building staying vacant than in him using it. I heard somehere (was it here?) that the cost of refurbishment was รขโยฌ600,000. If he doesn’t move in, I’ll write to him and ask him why ๐

Ah, hindsight… ๐
So will Biffo be moving in on May 6th or 7th? It might be a nice little ceremony. He could motor up Chesterfield Avenue, stop at the Aras and then go straight up to the house with his bags. Maybe throw an envious glance into Deerfield as he goes past.
In any case, I imagine there’ll be a little bit more of a focus on this residence in the months ahead than there has been. Oh and by the by, it may not be a great structure but The Steward’s Houses is an appropriate name for the residence of the country’s temporary leader. Unless it’s changed to Aras an Taoiseach… because of course nothing could be left in English in this Anglophobic State, could it? :p- AuthorPosts
