It is only temporary.
Ireland’s notion of “temporary” is worryingly close to permanent. See threads on Oireachtas car park and shop signage π π

Sorry – it’s hard to make out. That’s one of the most important elevations in the country; the West Front of Trinity. It’s hard to make out behind the trees and LED signage.

The butchery of College Green proves beyond any doubt that Dublin City Council have as much vision as a myopic bat in a fog.
The pedant in me wants to point out that bats are almost blind π But I agree with what you’re saying. I think the problem is that very few councillors represent the city centre as a ward. Try to build someting in Dublin SE? Good luck. That place is almost UNESCO. But tamper with one of the single most important architectural set pieces in the country? Go right ahead. Sure they’re only pavements. And trees are good for the environment. Call it Laceyism, for want of a better term.

Drivers warned over College Green
In the long term this might actually decrease pedestrian traffic because before people would hope off early and walk?http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/0720/breaking47.htm
Well the air is unbreathable enough now with the current level of bus exhausts. I await the re-routing of more buses through CG.

BusGate strikes. Jesus. Bye bye vista.

ParticipantMaybe a statue of justice and a tricolour on it? So people know it’s a court building. I really like the building but it could honestly be anything. We could end up with loads of Americans turning up on the weekends, thinking it’s the convention centre.

Now if only we could sort out the loop line bridge with something as clean.
Saw a design for something much more transparent and inobtrusive. About eight or nine years ago.

Garda Immigration Bureau. Or at least that’s who’s on the bottom floor.

ParticipantThe Celtic Tiger Memorial Bridge? This thing was green-lit in 1998 or 1999 so it’s only fitting.

ParticipantBut where do buses cross the Liffey if not O’Connell St to College Green? Trinity College is a massive impediment to cross-city traffic and there are very few north/south roads crossing the entire city centre. If we want bus routes going right through the city, as opposed to parking up An Lar, then they need to be able to get across the river somewhere. I hate the masses of buses on our narrow roads. I hate how they’ve made crossing College Green easily one of the most dangerous places to be a pedestrian in Dublin. I hate their pollution and noise and size… but they have to go somewhere. The BusGate is asinine and ill-thought through but College Green is the intersection of three main routes through the city centre: North up OCS, South along Nassau St and west along Dame St. It’s the proper heart of the city centre and that’s as true for public transport as it is for romantic architecture buffs.

ParticipantSurely as convention centres go, it’s not terribly bad looking?

ParticipantThe H&M curvy glass wall is nice. But the rest of the centre is a disgrace. It’s even tackier inside than it was before the refurbishment.
fergalr
ParticipantI dunno about OCS being the main street of the country any more. Seems like that honour might go to the M7 these days. But it’s certainly not the main street of Dublin. The capital’s civic axis is Lord Edward Street – Dame St – College Green – Grafton Street.

ParticipantIs blue hour at night the new sunny sky for renderings of Dublin?

ParticipantIs that stumpy growth behind the keg atrium going to turn into the tower… or just remain a stump? It’s just that I don’t see any lift or emergency exit shafts going up. And it’ll look odd as a stump. Also, “stump” is almost as much fun to type as it is to say.

ParticipantThey’ve had the drums of the Four Courts and Custom House floodlit for a few months now.

ParticipantI would’ve thought smack in front of the main steps of the NCH would be a more appropriate location.
