ParticipantHas Ian Richie expressed an opinion of this latest mess? The two aviation lights certaintly make a mockery of his vision.

ParticipantPPP was my own speculation by the way, rather than a direct quote from any source. Info about current and future PPPs can be found at http://www.ppp.gov.ie/
They are, in the words of George Monbiot “an off-balance sheet fiddle” and as you said Nice work if you can get it!ew
ParticipantTom McEaney’s article in Sunday Times shed some light on whats happening here. Spencer Dock Development Company (private company, main shareholders are CIE and Treasury Holdings (Ronan, Barett et al.)) holds the development rights to the NCC site for 10 years but the site still belongs to CIE.
John O’Donoghue (minister of arts, sport, tourism (fun)) is expected to bring plans for NCC before dail this week. His department are still negotiating to obtain the site for free, presumably that would suit the SDDC too.
2 obstacles would then remain – building cost (150m) and running costs (ppp?).ew
ParticipantIs it not up to the designer to familiarise themselves with the surroundings? Including history of and plans for the immediate surroundings?

ParticipantOh surely not Zap! According to the national aquatic website
“the site is adjacent to the M50, making it accessible to the entire country, and is also close to rail, airport, and seaports.”
When I can afford a car I’ll give you a lift.ew
ParticipantI remember seeing some modern paintings of and around these Mills by Joby(Jos?) Hickey. Very good they were too! Since then I’ve quite liked the Boland Mill. They also made it easy to counter objections to Millenium tower (which is the same height?)

Participant“… in Spain people only own the land to a depth of 10 m. Anything deeper is owned by the state. in Ireland there is no limit on the depth to which land is owned…”
This quote appears in Darren Boyles Metro Review in todays Dublin Daily (new newspaper) and seems to be attributed to Seamus Brennan.
Surely this isn’t true?
I know that some people in living over the tunnel have applied to be compensated, but I didn’t know they could claim ownership of the ground. The basis of their claims was (I thought) for disturbance (significant) and devaluation (debatable).
Anyone know more? I know selling off air rights have formed part of the business case for Tara street, and wasn’t the airspace over railway sold to Croke Park? but I never heard of this oposite.

ParticipantThat’s a confusing article alright.
As far as I know the development can go ahead from a planning point of view as defined in the area plan, which was approved by the minister of environment ages ago (N.Dempsey).
The developers/owners can go ahead and build either a conference center or a park on that site without having to reapply for planning. The government does not have to “approve” a conference center in any planning sense.
What the article refers to is that the developers want the government to cough up some of (all?) the cash. That is the green light they mean.
If there isn’t a significant profit available then the park will likely go ahead instead, some time. Maybe. Must surely be a particular concern to owners of the yet to be built Spencer dock apartments.ew
ParticipantCC have done up the flats on Buckingham Street and Empress Place fairly recently and done a very fine job of it too. The central play area is done in astro turf and looks cool. May be the way to go re: scrubland…? All looks good and well maintained for the moment anyway. The original buildings are very well built and designed so they had a good starting point on these.
I love the 20% private housing idea Rory, I’m surprised I hadn’t heard or thought of it before.
Has anyone been into the flats on Jervis street? I always though the idea of living over a toy shop was pretty neat. I hope the sceme is being looked after.ew
ParticipantNever knew they were the same person! Is there anywhere I can go for the bluffers guide to Gardiner?

ParticipantI agree that Cork seems to be a little lost at the moment. I cringe when I hear people use pathetic terms such as the “real” capital. Thinking about what StephenC said – I think the defined role could be food capital. The city could build on the reputation of the county for having some of the best restaraunts and local producers. Cork’s also at the lead of the slow food movement (such as it is ) in Ireland. Good market in Cork too.

ParticipantThis was introduced to reduce the number of spurious objections. I never saw any statistics to indicate if it reduced the amount of rejected objections compared to objections upheld. I suspect that apart from being a ‘nice little earner’ it didn’t meet it’s own questionable aims and only limited participation in the planning process. I hope it gets done away with.
One practice that is encouraged by the charge is that groups of residents get together and one of them files an objection on the street or areas behalf.
Unfortunately it has happened that then just before the review, the person who’s name is on the objection is offered a sum to personally drop the objection. If they do, it is too late for any of those who felt also represented by the objection to file a further objection as its past the five weeks…
The charge stinks and I hope it gets dropped.ew
ParticipantDo you know the application number? and date lodged?
Anyone that wants to object ….

ParticipantNews talk have been reporting that a short list of names has been drawn up and a decision is expected (later today?).
The list they gave is
-sword of light
-monument of light
-brian boru something
-padrig pearse pillarWhat’s that all about? The news report gave no details. Who decides the name? (They?) Any comments I’ve read from ian Richie would surely rule out the boru/pearse suggestions. I presume he has some input into it…?
It was looking particularly good this morning by the way. I’m delighted to note that it still causes me to smile – the novelty has not worn off!

ParticipantIs school traffic such an issue in central london? Here it’s very much a suburban problem.
ew
ParticipantI do hope it goes smoothly for him. If this scheme fails it’ll be years before it gets tried again. Fingers crossed!

ParticipantHave you suggested this to the cleansing department?
If everyone on the forum calls them on Tel: 353 1 411300 I’m sure they’ll give the bridge a quick blast and maybe even put in a few replacement bulbs.ew
Participant…and when you’ve done all them, you could try the Natural History Museum on Merrion Street – an old forgotten (and hence untouched) victorian museum [go for the dead animals, stay for the wierd atmosphere].
I think it is still intact
