Hi all. I guess I’m what you could call a ‘lurker’ on these boards: I enjoy reading them every day, but rarely post anything. However, on my way into college today one thing cought my attention, namely the ballustrades (is that the right word?) on the east side of O’ Connell Bridge. Having not passed this way in a few days, I looked out from my bus this morning and noticed that one was missing, about halfway up on you left hand side as you go from Westmoreland St. to the northside. A little bit further up, a huge chunk has been gouged out of the stonework on top of the ballustrades. Looks like someone took a sledgehammer to it in the middle of the night. Has anyone else seen this? Does anybody know what happened? It’s a pity to see such damage, especially so soon after the bridge was given a well-overdue cleaning.

My vote for ugliest building(s) would have to be Nassau Street: the Kilkenny Centre, Blarney Woolen Mills, the two buildings at the corner with Dawson Street (beside what used to be Judge Roy Bean’s but is now yet another Porterhouse). It is a terrible collection of buildings, especially so close to Trinity and Grafton Street…Imagine the impression it creates for all those tourists getting off the buses to go and see the Book of Kells.
Also, I know it’s a little off-topic, but since I mentioned the Porterhouse here, what do people think of this kind of ‘chain-pub’ emerging in Dublin? There are four that I can think of right now: two in the city centre (Temple Bar and Nassau Street), one in Glasnevin and one in Bray. They already have this kind of thing in the UK with JD Wetherspoons and the like. For my money, I don’t think its a particularly welcome development. (And I don’t really like the beer either!)

This is where the hotel will be (i think). Anybody able to confirm this? it’s certainly a big enough site.

As far as I was aware, the 17 storey hotel was for a site thats currently overgrown and derelict, near one of the outlying units that has atlantic homecare etc in it. its on the blakestown side of the shopping centre. i could be wrong about this though – it’s ages since i first read about it.
the buildings behind the leisureplex are offices for fingal county council. read in one of the local newspapers that its the roads division going in there. seems like theyve been building for ages – its almost as if they keep going ‘ah, sure, throw an extra office block on the end there’. having walked through the courtyard thats now open to the public (its part of a pedestrian route from the Centre to coolmine), it looks a fairly decent job. not quite as eye-catching as the head offices in swords, but to my layman’s eye i thought it was quite impressive!
