I completely agree with you, Daragh. Those two outlets are just so ……… naff. I would love to see a branch of Galeries Lafayette in Dublin – it would be very successful I feel.
It would also be nice to see Carrefour enter the supermarket arena in Ireland as a serious alternative to the god-awful Tesco.

    1. Abuse is often as bad as libel. It corrodes civilized debate and interaction – its hostile nature tends to silence those who
    have a contribution to make.
    2. Libel is libel whether it’s in audio-visual form, in print or by other electronic means.

Your headline reads like a hysterical outburst from a red-topped tabloid.
Could we have a little more decorum and class on this forum?

Congratulations Boyler – I’m sure you make a contribution with your posts. As with most things, however, it’s not the quantity but the quality that counts. My own personal milestone was to make it past 50!

Countries sharing a common civilization have an influence upon each other (positive/negative) in a variety of ways and not just architecturally. I emphasize civilisation rather than culture as culture is defined by its genus civilisation (with local variation). The modern european state is today the repository of cultural identites commonly referred to as Western Civilisation. For all of us within this great civilisation ((whether we like or not), it is national identity which instantiates (and provides local variation to) this common civilisation.

Most National Stadia in Europe and elsewhere integrate ball sports with track and field sports.
It offers increased usage of the facility. How many internationals of rugby//soccer will be staged at
Lansdown Road per year? A separate athletics atadium that can hold National/European/World/Grand Prix events
is just not financially viable. But it can add critical mass to a National Stadium.

If we do not have provision for track and field at Lansdown Road, what hope do we ever have for such a national athletics facility in the future?

Rory W, I agree – bars should be places for everyone: to drink, to eat something, to interact with other people in a spirit of conviviality and in a good-natured manner; witout aggression or the fear of violence caused by binge drinking.
Planning regulations have a part to play here – for example, the development of superpubs should be carefully controlled.

From the responses so far, it appears that no-one is interested in developing a national stadium capable of supporting track and field. If track and field is not included, then the possiblity of having such a stand-alone facility built is virtually nill.
Please remember that it it not just competitons (European Athletics Championships, World Athletics Championship, National Championships, Grand Prix European Events, etc) that could be staged here, but it could also be a national resource for track and field training.

Mob79, it is about cultural change – something that takes generations to change, but the conditions for cultural change have to be put in place – the rewards are long-term.
Manstein’s comments are ambiguous (yet also aggressive). Perhaps the last thing we need in our country is rhis kind
    of agenda.
The hope is that we can achieve a civilised society and surely no-one can dispute that architecture can play a defining role in this process.

Yes, I agree Thomand Park. A cafe/bar should NOT have the same design/layout as a pub. and I’m sure this can be
done – it’s certainly very successful in Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Quality food and drink, and value for money would make the concept a success. Incidentally, I’m not against pubs per se, but I do like choice.

I think it is a fabulous idea – the thought of of drinking alcohol for hours in a pub without food is just too unbearable
to contemplate. But it will all depend on the quality of food offered, the ambience and the type of alcohol offered –
I personally like Belgian beers and also some of the superb micro-brewery beers produced in Ireland.

Aren’t the Irish Independent Property Supplement a disgrace?

You appear to lack grammatical knowledge.

Please…… let it be the Abbey – our National Theatre deserves the best possible site.

Photos of Dublin (by people who simlply take ad hoc pictures) can be found on http://www.flickr.com. Just type in ‘Dublin’
in the search box on the homepage.
    It’s updated daily.

The quality of built structures is of the upmost importance. It inspires us, and hopefully encourages us to engage with people in a civilized manner. There is nothing worse than ‘fear and loathing’ in a shopping centre.

I would love to see a section of every major shopping centre to have an integral section devoted to a farmers market
thus maintaining a real social link between the urban and the rural. And of course providing us with real food!

Hi Morlan, in fact I would say that your thread is the ONLY INTERESTING one on the this website –
one that is for the most part full of begrudgers or people who are engaged in private converstations.
PLEASE lets have more photo posts – I live in QATAR so I need to see what is going on!

Thanks Morlan, your pictures are fabulous.
I wish more people who post can ILLUSTRATE their points
instead of being just text talking-heads – this is
    so BORING.
