New road for Dublin airport
A new access road at Dublin airport will officially open tomorrow.
Passengers who are being dropped off at the airport by car will now have to access the terminal by taking the new road, which takes motorists through the centre of the soon-to-be-opened Terminal 2.
Passengers using the short-term car park and those arriving by taxi, bus and coach will, for another two months, continue to access Terminal 1 by the existing approach road.
From March all passengers departing from Terminal 1 will access that terminal via the new approach road.
The traffic changes are part of the ongoing programme to upgrade the airport’s campus roads and will be clearly signposted on overhead gantries and other signage as vehicles enter the airport.
Terminal 2 is due come on stream in November with a capacity of 15 million passengers. It will accommodate all of the airport’s long-haul traffic and offer a unique new customs clearance facility for US-bound passengers.

a good set of sharp elbows and an eye for a diamond in the rough is eesential for any flea marketeering. It’s a real pity this hasn’t taken off in Dublin on a bigger scale-either in a purpose built place or on the streets.
It really is a pity. And the argument that Dublin’s crappy weather (for street trading) and large amount of gougers work against such plans is invalid when you look at London’s amazing market culture. They have their fair share of rain and louts and they manage to make it work admirably.
If we could get anything like that we’d be lucky.

Fine Gael TD Alan Shatter said the work was “lunacy” at a time of unprecedented national economic crisis. “This is not the time for taxpayer’s money to be allowed to walk out the gates of Leinster House. A stop must be put to this midsummer madness,” he said.
Great argument Alan. What the government should be doing is keeping all of our money stuffed in the mattresses in Leinster House. And sure while we’re at it, the OPW crowd can sit there twiddling their thumbs until Celtic Tiger 2.0 roars into our lives.

What about this? The city council’s Roads Maintenance Division have just laid those studded pavement tiles here in the middle of Temple Bar to help the visually impaired cross the road …. even though this is a PEDESTRIAN AREA where there is NO TRAFFIC.
.. really …While I agree those studded slabs are ridiculous, that street is actually in use by vehicles at certain times of the day, so I’d say that was their reasoning.

Participant“A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said that they would not cease works and they are not reviewing the situation at the moment.”
Good old City Council. Heads in the sand.
‘Sure why not just review the whole situation after we’ve finished making a total disgrace of the area, eh?’

ParticipantSorry to divert from the gate, but just on an earlier subject in this thread which was – I know – a divisive one: the gated concourse of Bank of Ireland.
Not sure if any of you checked it out, but they held a farmers’ market there on Wednesday and it was a bit of an eye-opener. As far as I know it was purely a once-off to promote some BOI entrepreneurship thing, but it was a really good use of the space. Even on as dreary a day as Wednesday was, it gave a bit of life to the College Green area and pretty starkly emphasised how a part of the city with such potential has become just a big obnoxious junction.
Yes, the arguments for and against either opening the concourse during the day or getting rid of the railings altogether have been had, but using the space like this was a really positive move, even if some of the bankers didn’t look too comfortable with the proximity of those weird longhairs encroaching on their territory.
Anyway, I think it proved that – even as just a summer thing – that area can really be put to good use for the public. Plus, with a bus gate in force, it could actually be slightly peaceful.
But it’s not going to happen, is it?

ParticipantBus gate got the go-ahead tonight. City Council decided to go with the neutered version.
From “some time in July”, it will operate the previously-mentioned 7 to 10am and 4 to 7pm weekday-only hours.
