You have to buy a membership because some of the films on show may not be passed by our censors yet. As they are considered “unclasified” they can not be shown to the general public, unless membership of a film club or festival is taken out.

It is the same deal with the IFI

Being the one who made the original comment, I have to point out that the place i was referring to is very much just a village, it is in the countryside, far from any large towns or cities.

    Thanks, you’ve been very informative.

It’s a pity that there is such a flurry of opposition everytime a tall building is proposed for Dublin, althoght i do understand the reasons why so many people have reservations about them. I’m hoping that if the u2 tower goes ahead succesfully then it will perhaps kickstart some action on tall buildings, and rejuvinate that area of the city, although the fact that it is meant as a landmark building could cause the opposite effect.

Brian, while i don’t disagree with your main point (anger at development in Dublin from people in rural areas) I find your tone to be very patronising. It may come as a shock to you, but there are many educated, forward-thinking, liberal people living outside of Dublin. Perhaps if you visiited these areas and met these people instead of basing your opinion on stereotypes it would open your eyes a little. These people are largely upset at Dublin’s development because they believe it’s taking place at the expense of their own towns, not because they want the country to remain stagnant and poorly developed.

It could’ve been worse, at least you didn’t work for them full time… i am now unexpectedly unnemployed.

It’s a pity, because i believe it was a quality newspaper, much better that a whole lot of other successful papers out there. Perhaps we should have had more nudity and put the Beckhams on the cover.

I wasn’t aware that you were writing a piece for the paper, i’m sure it would’ve been great…

perosnally i think the m&s buildings is one of the ugliest in the city.

the new roches store cladding looks fine, but as someone else said previously, it reminds me a bit of a B&Q warehouse.

I’m not surprised at the Southside Peoples stance on this. I’ve found it to be almost entirely filled with rehetoric and hyperbole…

i’m sorry, but i can’t take this post seriously. 5 storeys IS NOT HIGH! this is what happens in a country where the tallest building is 60 metres tall. i come from a village with less that 3,000 and we have buildings over 5 storeys high (which were built in the 19th Century) i really cant believe that you would consider 5 storeys in a town as large as Bray to be high, if anything, new buildings in Bray should be three times the height of that.

if it’s the one on skyscrapers.com then it is extremely amateurish and hasn’t a hope of going up. sorry to spoil your fun….i am also a skyscraper fan but trust me, we’re better off without that one.

i think people are missing the point here… nobody is suggesting that we should lock kids up for being naturally curious/ adventurous. However, it is not the problem of the architect or the corporation if these children decide against common sense to climb the bridge, and they should not be forced to change the design for this reason.

i say let them climb on it if they want….there is no need to do something extreme like change the design to stop them. i see kids climbing on bridge walls everyday on my way home from work, yet i dont see any newspaper articles about that… this story simply emerged beacause it is a high profile, newly opened bridge. people will forget about it soon enough

Speaking of impressive bridges, anyone care to post pics/ links of favourite bridges around the country?

i always loved the Foyle bridge in Derry, one of two landmark bridges in the city.

Nobody was comparing it to the bridge at blackhall place, i meant the LUAS bridge at taney.

i like the bridge, but it’s very similar looking to the new Luas bridge in Dundrum. It would have been great to have two completely different ‘landmark’ bridges being built rather than just two copys of each other.

Off course, now i will probably get replies saying “what, are you blind? they’re COMPLETELY different to each other!”

The first one is *yawn*….so boring.
the italian entry does nothing for me. i like the one that was publishd in the Sunday Times, but i’d be very surprised if it won.

the mongelli one is certainly interesting, and would be a great landmark building, but i would like something a little more substantial, a bit taller for the U2 Tower.

at 60metres though, i think the design is going to have to be a bit radical for it to remain a “landmark building”. while 60m may be tall for Dublin, it certainly isn’t in world terms, and that height alone will not justify it’s landmark title.

I honestly can’t say i notcied, and i doubt most European viewers did either. If anything, i found the lack of advertisement for the Latvian tourist board to be more shocking than anything. Including the Austrian song.
