Initial winning church design (by ?) was rejected by Archbishop Mc Quaid (Dont really know why, but he also had a difficulty years later with the crib in the Church at Dublin Airport so it may have been “artistic differences”) and the church was built to an entirely different design by others.

And the broken wheel logo replaced the “Winged Wheel” CIE logo – aka “The Flying Snail”

Dont much like the very noisy music intro , that requiring a flying lunge for the remote every time, or the flying numbers graphic either.

Lucky the traffic is so bad this season that I am usually only home in time for the C4 news at 19.00.

Will there be tellys on the Luas / Metro I wonder.

You must have seen that photo of the NYC architects of the 1930’s dressed up as the buildings they designed – Van Alen as Chrysler etc.

I can think of some deeply scary buildings in Dublin to dress up as.

In rural Ireland one could dress as a town planner and frighten the wits out of “farmers just wanting a house, or 200”. Dont think it would work in Dublin though!

“Am I right in thinking it is owned by the same family or company as the Savoy.”

Correct, both are part of the Ward-Anderson chain, largest cinema operators on this island.

And if you live near UCD the return of University too buggers up the traffic!

Dont know if I could handle this at present , what with summer ending, Luas a 22nd century solution to a 19th century problem, schools back so that traffic returns.

Need escapism now – Development Plan, Regional Development Plan anyone.

But thanks for the “heads up” anyhow.

Have indeed seen the show and am a little in too minds about it. Yes the publlicity is useful and the attention to conservation issues is good. I find the celebrity endorsement ending, which is seemingly a bit of an ad on, adds little and cheapens the show.

Ptolemy (really, some parents should use their brains around the baptismal font ) gives me a Pt’ain.

The Baths were stunning, had heard of them but never saw them before. The Music Hall was fun too. The Lino factory has potential.

Some of the other projects have the look of being money pits, not just capital works but huge on going running costs, with no clear use which would give an income stream.

Magazine Fort is an interesting suggestion.

It is true tht it may be as quick to walk down to the quays, assuming you can walk that far easily, but the question remains, why do you actually have to walk?

Why is there no transport link from the main rail station to the main shopping street, the museum, art gallery, etc etc.?

I still think if you found that anywhere else, other than in those US cities that have very limited bus services, we would find it very strange indeed.

This is an odd building, which I pass regularly.

Unlikely to be power supply related.

Perhaps the two doors suggest male and female toilets?

Just recently I noticed that the nice old mosaic at the entryway to the former Aer Lingus office, at the top of Grafton Street, seems to have vanished too. It was for a shop long predating the Aer Lingus fit out.

If I recall correctly the very first escalator in Ireland was installed in Roches Stores in Henry Street. Early 1960’s.

Not a lot of people know that!

Dublin has the longest runway in the state

for a map of airports and airfields see http://www.irishaviation.net/iremap.htm

This is now somewhat out of date, some of the airfields are now closed.

    Paul

For prints you can now buy an excellent scanner very cheaply, less han 70 euros, which would be hard to beat for any service.

A slide scanner might be worth the investment, for transparencies. – 2800 dpi is fine especially if you have access to Photoshop, 4000 dpi better if you have the money.

Hard to find here, however, better choice and prices in London.

“About the GPO Arcade, does it strike anyone as utterly bizarre the location of the arcade, or rather how/why it opens onto Princes St, which is little more than a back alley.

Did the Metropole or Capital cinemas use to have an entrance onto the st, as this would probably explain it. Even then, there seems little point to to locating its entrance there, unless Princes St led somewhere when the arcade was built in the late 20s/30s.”

    Good point indeed.
    The answer is no.
The arcade was developed after 1916 fires changed the ground plan forever here and it runs out to Princes St there for no, apparently, good reason I can fathom. Was the arcade developed by the Post Office, certainly the Government had much space on the GPO side until fairly recently?

Woolworths were the big tenant on the other side, giving an alternative route into the arcade through their front door further down Henry Street.

The La Scala Theatre (cinema really), later called Capitol was built with the facade slightly closer to O’Connell St than opposite the arcade exit and it made no reference to it, if I recall correctly. The Metropole Cinema came somewhat later but neither ever had direct access to the arcade, – the street was always in the way. It was a rat run for vans and bikes going up and down to Independent newspapers printing works further down the street and crossing over was a tricky thing to do, even if you had not been in the Princes Bar.
