ParticipantI agree that the Carton House development could be a lot worse. I can’t object to it. As a Dubliner who has never been to Carton, I cannot complain that I’m losing some of my heritage.
I was once totally against the revision of historic buildings for new commercial uses but I have changed my mind recently. For example, the Bewlays Hotel on Merrion Rd pays due respect to the facade of Thomas Prior House. I do not know what internal features were kept or lost and cannot speak to that. But I know that for all my initial dismay at Thomas Prior House’s conversion to a hotel, I’d never ventured inside or done more than glance in its direction as I passed by. At least the building is now in use rather than in mothballs.

ParticipantI was a big fan of this building, it was a good companion to the Carrolls/Nationwide building further along the canal. It’s a great shame it was razed, and that photo of its succesor is depressing. I wish I’d known sooner about this.
