Why is it some applications are subjected to round after round of further information requets and others pass by unnoticed? See images of Jacob’s Mills currently being redeveloped. This building more than many in the area requires sensitive treatment and is on one of my favourite quaysides of Cork. What is with the roof? To my mind the continued dereliction of the building would be preferable to the use of cheap and/or ugly materials.

It’s a little shocking cos I walk past it everyday and am used to the vacant gap! An improvement over Goldsmith Hall next door.

Regarding Butlers, as I recall only down the road l’Occitane (itself a chain) moved in and made a virtue of some original features. There are countless examples internationally where “global corporate branding” is not an obstacle when dealing with local planning. The brand is altered to accommodate the environment it finds itself in. What’s makes Butlers so bloody special? At least it Butlers who moved in and not Vodafone.

It’s not that the physical construction will take that long – there are other more mundane considerations like finding homes for the existing tenants on that particular site.

Is that not a perfect example of late 20th C Irish vernacular architecture?

This proposal is every bit of its time in the way that Merchant’s Qy was of its. The only positive I can see coming from this devt is the actual realisation of retail space in the city core.

The Patrick St aspect is bar the weakest of this scheme. Needs revision.
As for the nine storeys – the design looks like they slabbed that on so that in appeal two can get knocked off with ease.

hmmm… perhaps if one-offs actually paid their way in terms of infrastructure provision, rather than having our utilities cross subsidise… mind you if a more realistic ‘cost of connection’ was in place you might see people thinking differently about building patterns

So is someone with a bungalow w/driveway directly onto the N22 with their pre-cast concrete eagles on the pillar, (picked up in the local Woodies DIY garden centre) complete with Grecian style true terracotta flower pots rreflecting the “influence of the diaspora”…?

God, those red lamps stick things are awful. Saw the one by the bridge on Ringsend Rd last night. Might aswell be a series of internally illuminated Spar signs. The metallic pole with the reflected electric blue (i.e. what is there already) is much better and far subtler. Are DDDA afraid there’ll be nothing to catch the eye down GCD so they have to resort to this retina searing spectacle?
