ParticipantThe biggest problem is the danger of the LA’s getting too self regarding and self congratulatory for past achievements. LUTS is 30 years old and only then the private car aspect was delivered. The LA’s interact well in terms of transport planning, but should not get too complacent based on past successes.
CASP is OK but getting central government to get behind such initiaitves is vital. Having the Midelton line lobbed in with Transport 21 is a disgrace. Essentially there is nothing for Cork in Transport 21. The midelton line was already approved in concept. Serious lobbying is required.
It is unacceptable that the most car dependent community in Ireland (Carrigaline) is in such a supposedly well planned region of Ireland.

Participant“…their Jacob’s Mill development to use as a luxury 5-star 35-bedroom boutique hotel…”
says it all. how can it be 5 star and yet be a boutique hotel? Don’t think there’s many of either around with such an atrocious and ignorant approach to reusing existing structures. ESPECIALLY on such an important vista on the South channel.

ParticipantAnd the cycle comes full circle… The 70’s brown brick junk of Mount St begins itself to be demolished and the street “re-renewed”. The original planning application was for a 7 storey office block – not sure what made it through planning in the end. Now if only Grattan Court (if that’s it’s name) could be taken care of.

ParticipantThis argument is fundamentally flawed as it assumes Dublin is comparitive to Paris and hence the Thomas St proposal can be judged on the merits of high rise in Paris. How pathetic! I mean Dublin is great and all but let’s not get carried away! There are countless what could be termed for Dublin “highrise” buildings in Paris along entire streets, yet even the 8 storey parts of the Digital Hub proposal are causing disquiet here. Despite our best aspirations we’re slavinsh tied to the British model of urban planning. We’ll never have our la Defense (that boat has already sailed…). If you want to see the Dublin of 25 years time, go to London or Manchester and see the recent projects. An incoherent approach to reasonably well designed taller buildings.

ParticipantMr Gavin is a civil servant and it is quite normal to apply for ‘better’ jobs in the civil service without prejudicing your current position. Unlike the private sector, the recruitment process is transparent. If anything the fact that he applied and was selected for an interview should be seen as encouraging for both him and the job he is doing.

Participantdid the developers engage in any pre-planning with city council? this reminds me of another de-b & m high rise project in an unsuitable area
d_d_dallas
ParticipantYes,
however given that this will more than likely go to AnBP the whole point of the FI will diminish and serve to lengthen the planning process as ultimately the Board will make their own call/revisions.d_d_dallas
ParticipantNever mind 51… how about 29, 22, 17, 15, 13, 10 and 7 storeys in height ALL ON THE SAME SITE!!!

ParticipantI have no idea what the composition of the plan is – just saw the image in the book. Although from its size offices and apartments surely. The protected structures are untouched with a large “gherkin-esque” blob of glass inserted between.
Suppose it’s not that bad (well better than heuston gate or point village)d_d_dallas
Participantyeah,
that’s been up for a few weeks now. There’s an image in STW’s book sneakily tucked away in the index of this proposal. It’s um… large.d_d_dallas
