    And nor should he.
People are dismissing this project based soley on the description of “26”.
How about waiting to see how it’s designed and will fit in with it’s surroundings.
A building does not have to be the same height as it’s surroundings to “fit in”. Obviously the case for badly designed taller building outweighs those for well-designed. But tall buildings are so few and far between in this country – maybe we should wait to see the proposal before dumping on the idea.

oh wait – Andrew Duffy already mentioned the delay, sorry!

just checked up on the net – coolred pearse st… TIME EXTENSION!!! Or should that be “delaying the inevitable rejection”.
I’d be really surpirsed if it sailed through 1st time, or at all – inspite of having millenium tower and bolands mills as next door neighbours.

Yup – read that one last week. I’d be really surprised if it actually get’s off the starting blocks. The article was just a nice bit of publicity for the PROPOSED development. I’m guessing the D4 mentality do-gooders (in this case it’s actually in D4!!!) who auto-object to everything are salivating at the prospect of hobbling this plan no matter how well designed it may be.
It’ll go to an bord planala, get reduced to a “timeless” red brick with painted blue metal balcony 4+1 courtyard dev – smashing.

Similar plans are afoot near pearse st – but have heard nothing about it in the press.

Roches do have a pretty good record with their interiors – a few years ago they gutted their flagship store (their 1st, the big yellow one in Cork) and created as Grahan described for the Henry Street one, a large atrium. Decent quality restaurant (quality of materials that is) and each concession given it’s own look. A vast improvement on what it was before. They certainly compare more favourably over another Irish retailer…

Yeah – I was really impressed (again) by it the other day. Come back to me in six months though when the clean exterior has had a bit of exposure to Dublin’s quality air.

With all this Arnott’s related beautification going on… what are the chances Arnotts will take down their yellow plastic sign the runs vertically on Henry St?

I’ve always liked the millenium wing for the vaulted large space it created bang in the middle of Merrion Sq – the facade on Clare St outside is hardly anything original – merely to annouce that Benson and Forsyth woz ‘ere.

Did remark that within a week of it opening there was graffitti on the stone cladding – the resolution? They put a printed piece of A4 over the graffitti with some message about opening hours or something.

It has of course been cleaned since.

As you may all recall there was once upon a time a plan for a mega bus station on aston Qy that was going to avoid all the problems you mention re: Busaras. So at least once upon a time CIE has some foresight.
Of course Charlie got in the way forced them to hand over all their land and now we have a delightful string of superpubs in it’s place.

There’s nothing wrong with asking if we should demolish a building. Jeez – do we actually demolish anything these days? (cue can of worms…) Atoning for the 60’s is one thing – but sometimes something has to go to give us something better.
Note: this is a point in GENERAL and not a swipe at Busaras or any other jewel we have (or lost recently). No rants please!!!

Busaras is in keeping with CIE’s proud tradition of maintaining the lowest possible quality stations. Granted Heuston and Conolly got a lick o’paint of late – but give them time – CIE will bring these stations to the level we all expect!!!

Dundalk man – I’m sure Dundalk isn’t glistening sparkly eat ur dinner off the pavement type of place as you describe – but seriously… O’Connell St is “appealing”. I have difficulty sharing ur viewpoint on that one.
As big as London is, the main areas seem to be alot cleaner than the main areas here – and that’s with the LACK of rubbish bins in public areas/stations (thank the ‘ra for that one). Now don’t get me wrong – London is dirty – but with no bins on their streets they seem to do better than us – the chippie wrapper never seems to make it to the bin – rather the pavement next to it.

Hmmm – I have a bad feeling about the future of Lavitt’s quay and Popes Qy – there are too many application refusals because of the proposed demolitions of older not really noteworthy buildings – so the City Council propose to retain the facades and developments go ahead at the exact same scale with these ludicrous out of scale facades. Example: Owen O’Callaghan and TCH buildings going on opposite side – these huge blocks reaching six stories dwarfing some two story facade. I’m all in favour of retention – but the line has to be drawn somewhere. In this case it really would be better to clear the site, or not proceed at all.

Watergold is probably the most schizofrenic (unintentionally I imagine) building in Cork. A complete mess. It would have been a really good opportunity to provide some unity to lands around (which all will be developed) and help start off the possibility of a new street side progressing back to the main village. Instead they’ve merely accentuated Douglas’ reputation as “little america”!!! Known as the Addam’s Family House in some local circles.

That said – the apartments inside are supposed to be fabulous – the view on either side discounted!

Is that the red brick stylie one that was “inspired” by East Village, Douglas and the Georgian terrace further up the Quay? What is being built where the orange building is (see below). It’s not THAT bad – it could be alot worse (i.e. nearly every single apartment development the length of the Dublin Quays)

Or the monstrous silver thing adjacent in this picture – I thought that got rejected.

So… um… we don’t like the School so?!?

Still – it’ll prob not go ahead in this expensive design now – tough times etc… In their desperation to appease Southern voters (strike action taking place today) – the government will prob push through a more (ala Metro) streamlined facility – so we can all look forward to a nice Hawkins House prefab rendition.

Looking at the site it’s going on – this will be great. Cork needs something – anything interesting at this stage. I think I’m being seduced by the night time rendering though. The design is a bit “mixed” but I think it looks a damn sight better than some of the other educational projects coming up of late.
Bear in mind it’s a city centre school building.

North docklands is a waste of an opportunity. Southern looking like that too – despite the amazing potential with the basin, mills and gas sites.
Well – at least for the next 20 years. Maybe then some of the kellogs inspired blocks will be redeveloped.
