ParticipantThey do have the power as an application of this size would require so much time and resources that all other North Dublin planning fuctions would grind to a halt. So if it looks completely unviable then they can refuse as to not waste their time.

ParticipantThe notion of a gateway is a good one though – if ever put into reality. Example: arriving into Dublin from the north – either by airport or train is not an inpsiring image – but if you arrived into swanky well designed “wow factor” buildings your impressions would be much higher. You know what they say about first ones…
So piggybacking on this notion gives developers leverage with planners.d_d_dallas
ParticipantAn underpass is a fab idea – but we can’t even build these at junctions of our major intercity routes – just cheapo congestion causing roundabouts.

ParticipantWell lucky for us Fingal CC has the power to refuse permission to apply for permission… if that makes sense.

ParticipantYup – was walking past the base of the spike the other day… there are literally scrawl marks on it already – some dumb c%$t’s initials with a compass or something similar. Classy.
People were also quite UNafraid to touch it – faces up against the metal.Spire of Dublin – RIP.

ParticipantCloser to home the millenium tower in Grand Canal Basin is refreshing in the sea of crud that’s piling up in the rest of the Docklands
d_d_dallas
ParticipantI was wondering that too as the mill next door is getting the Treasury Holdings makeover at the mo. Would make super apartments. But being a DART station could just aswell be offices.

ParticipantI like it and it has defintely set the pace for what ILAC has to live up to.

ParticipantIf this actually went ahead as described – goodbye M50, M1, any thought of extra capacity in Dublin Airport. You think congestion is bad now? You’d need to triple the capacity of the M50 alone. The figures are very revealing – check out todays indo – 17 million of the proposed visitors are supposed to come from INSIDE Ireland – think about it: every man woman and child will have to visit this venue FOUR times a year – yeah right! Ireland the country attracted 5.85 mill last year in tourist numbers – is this with three airports, ferrys etc… So just Dublin airport will pass on more people than Heathrow?
A more likely scenario and remember we’re talking Mr Liffey Valley, Mahon Point here is that the vega dev will work out to be “unviable” but can I build the 40,000 apartments anyway along with a million sqft of commercial space, oh and since I’m not building the theme park forget the monorail or extra two lanes for the M1 as proposed.
His dev’s are the AIDS virus to established urban areas.d_d_dallas
ParticipantThis is so funny – this is like Micheal McDowell raging on about the Donnybrook “tower” – comparing it’s HUGE scale to the MONSTER that is … um… Liberty Hall.
19 stories would make me go “wow” only if it actually got permission to get built.Use of the word “tower” a tad questionable too

ParticipantI’m not bloodlusting for highrise (this time!) but it is funny to see some peoples world view absolutely narrowed to a blindingly fine point. That Liberty Hall could ever be used as such an example – SHOCK! That Big – wow – that’s the biggest building in Ireland (it’s not) – let’s object! But that the D4 attitude all over isn’t it???

ParticipantSmithfield – €400,000 one bed apartments next door to two storey social housing.

ParticipantThat’s hilarious… “of the same scale as Liberty Hall”. Yeah – cos Liberty Hall is HUUUUGE!

ParticipantHmmmm – total utter destruction might be better than just a clean.
Seriously though – of all the diappointing buildings on O’C St – this is probably my least liked. At the very least the could remove the plastic logo and scrub it up a bit.

A well designed house can always command a better asking price if it stands out from the beige pebbledashed turds. Architecture isn’t just designing a facade with pretty materials – it is the creation of space.

ParticipantYeah – it reminds me of the courthouse in Cork. A fine building that was closed to be renovated outside and in. The City Council took ownership of the building – while court functions were held outside in another venue at a cost close to €1.5m per anum in rent etc.
The Council restored the facade years ago – it was up to the the Dept of Justice to take care of the interior. Several Years later – the place was still boarded up. Yup – lovely gleaming facade – mothballed inside.
Rather than spend the money at the time to do up the interior they preferred to spend millions vastly more than the original bill on rent in the intervening years. It was only local political pressure to do the job in time for cultural celebrations in 18 months time coupled with the fact that the City Council never formally handed the building back to the government that allowed this job to go ahead.
What should have cost very little has now ballooned (rent for the other venue isn’t going away either) and the City Council are paying for the job, leasing it back to the government over the next 20 years. That’s good fiscal management.November 10, 2003 at 5:02 pm in reply to: Denis O’Brien to build 26 storey residential in Donnybrook #736918d_d_dallas
ParticipantSwanky indeed – so much for building up as an effective use of land and keeping per-unit costs down… pure status symbol. I’d like to see the prices for a penthouse in THAT!

ParticipantOr… let’s not debate and just build the damn thing as set out in DTO’s platform for change. Enough is enough – the constant two-ing and fro-ing with consultant reports and studies… it’s maddening. There’s nothing to to be reported that hasn’t already been studied a thousand times.
I’m not concerned in what form the solution is delivered – so long as something is done. The problem is not going to go away, despite all the talking and consulting.Yeah a Metro’s not that cheap – yup – that’s called “INVESTMENT”. I think this government has a hard time separating investment from expenditure. Spend for now – invest for the future.
I’ll say it again. You invest for the future – and they way things are going – we ain’t gonna have a very bright one, but we’ll have a sea of reports to wade through.

ParticipantWow! It would a miracle if that got the go-ahead.
Phat chance.

ParticipantCentral Bank is one of the only decent buildings built in Dublin in the last 40 years – it is SS’s masterpiece, and a wonder of engineering in construction. It’s also perfectly fitting for those who reside in it.
If you want to see an ugly building go around the corner from Central Bank and check out Hawkins house – a cliche I know – but it is the most seriously ugly building we have.
Any news on it’s refurbishment? The plans were unveiled years ago (think either OMS or Murray OLaoire?!?) – but no movement… story?
As for CB supposed to be higher – the roof was in direct contravention of the planning permission of the time, but as the building was built from “the top down” the roof was the first thing installed and so to compromise the cladding was left off the roof – but “leaks” years later meant the roof got finished off to some degree (and quite visible it is throughout Dublin).
