ParticipantYeah – it’s much easier to say traffic and disruption fears have forced the event to be ruled out rather than we do not possess the security capability to contain the type of protests seen in other parts of the world during summits and G8 meetings.

ParticipantI thought pastiche was to be avoided at all costs under the O’Connell St plan…?

ParticipantHis original comments were very apt – junkies, custom house etc … but… “I’ve also heard that moaney, second-city-issue-ridden Corkonians meet in Heuston station when they arrive in Dublin; so I propse we completely refurbish it or better yet move it to remove the ‘problem’ “
Ouch the poor Corkonians! Maybe the chip is infact on the other shoulder?!?

Participantphil, I can see the bridge designers view of wanting to maintain their own design, but yeah – it would have been nice if the bridge was integrated with the boardwalk.

ParticipantWe have city managers…?
Not elected I know – but in the case of Cork – J Gavin doing good work to fight his corner by the Lee to create a more progressive Cork. The Mayors come and go – but his vision remains. Pushed developers sitting on sites to bring projects forward – encouraged some projects to be more adventurous and (shock!) add MORE scale. Basically fighting to right what went (is) wrong there.
Of course the flip side is you could have a city manager more interested in back handers and not in the city he’s in charge of.

ParticipantSomething along the lines of: they wanted their winning design to be ‘as entered’ into the millenium bridge competition, and the boardwalk interefered with that so the council respected their wishes and 20 feet clearance later thankyouverymuch.

ParticipantI heard the boardwalk doesn’t integrate with the millenium bridge by design – at the request of the architects involved.

ParticipantHooray Cork! Finally pulled it’s socks up…

ParticipantI wouldn’t mind a bit more “carbon copy” Oxford St here. I live here! It’s not like I have my monthly flying visits to London or anything so having a decent range of comparison shopping venues in my everyday life would be welcome. Dublin has a pathetic lack of decent city centre commercial space. Suffolk St, Sth King St, new ILAC might help out though…
The only good thing about Clery’s is it’s facade – a thoroughly second rate shop inside (stock etc). Potentially with it’s location and building could be a premier department store. Must do better!d_d_dallas
ParticipantYeah – and compare the speed at which the private sector projects get finished.
I get ya now on the statue! I do remember seeing that shot, but assumed it was on the ulster bank (I should really pay more attention!)

ParticipantOn Jurys??? Em sorry Monday morning fuzzyiness.
What got me was how grimey everything looked. Goes to show how quickly we forget. Once upon a time – Dublin… land of the surface car parks and blackened building stock.
Was walking through Trinners on Saturday… was distinctly unimpressed by those cobbles all of a sudden!

ParticipantSuper Valu, Centra, and Musgraves are the same company (i.e. Musgraves) so if anyone knows about market saturation in a particular area…
This shop wont be a Super Valu per se. I think they want to model it the lovely Dunnes’ on Georges St and N Earl St… so a classy shop in an area in dire need of something to attract some punters.d_d_dallas
ParticipantI saw that show too! I felt really stupid after seeing all the new stone blocks going in infront of the rubble… I used to wonder how that particular wall always looked so pristine – duh!

ParticipantYeah… how did the Wellington Monument escape unharmed? Is Phoenix Park too far away for semtex or something…?

ParticipantIs Shay Cleary Mr Mid Rise in Ireland? This Pearse St development, Benidorm Cross, and County Hall Redevelopment…?

Participant…However, the Irish Farmers Association rejected the guidelines as too restrictive as it said the enforcement will lead to family members being forced to live in clusters of houses.
Macra na Feirme said Mr Cullen was being hypocritical as young people wanting to build homes in rural area were still being hit by exorbitant development levies…
says it all really “forced to live in clusters” … “exorbitant development levies”…
Can this gulf ever be bridged?d_d_dallas
Participantor maybe something along the lines of “fine go off and build your crap hole – except note that a segregated motorway will be built (eventually) so you wont be adjacent to a national primary route and thus while you enjoy the benefits, you infact limit the traffic expansion/capacity of said route. Also you’ll have to pay for the provision of the infrastructure to your non-sustainable crap hole. That means eircom/esb customers in efficient urban areas will not subsidise the expensive construction of your connection points. If you are building on your Daddy’s farm land – it is just that “FARM LAND” zoned for agricultural use. Ownership of land does not automatically mean it can be built on.”
Too subtle…?

ParticipantHadn’t seen the street in ages – was very surprised to see how much is finished. It’s looking exceptional – although the lights bug me. Overall a very good thing – the creation of mini plazas dotted along the curve of the street works well. This will serve our second city well for years to come.
