Too tall for the docklands? isn’t the whole point of the docklands that greater heights can be achieved without a negative impact on Georgian Dublin.

Windsor house is now the second tallest building on the island after Elysian, Cork. I notice that Belfast didn’t get as much benefit from the boom as cities in the Republic did. There’s still a large amount of surface car parks in the city centre and aside from the kremlin, Donegal street is empty and very poorly illuminated at night. Also alot of the street paving, pedestrian crossings and street lights are very 80’s in their design. Almost retro

DUBLIN City Council is pushing ahead with a new multi- million-euro bridge over the River Liffey.

It has invited “pre-qualification submissions” from contractors for the construction of the Marlborough St Public Transport Priority Bridge.

Contractors must submit their tenders by May 15 next.

The estimated value of the contract is from €8m to €12m, the tender documents say.

Last Autumn, the Council said construction was due to commence in late 2009, but it is being funded under the Transport 21 programme and it is not clear if this timetable is being adhered to.

    bet you to it:

the bridge is not open to pedestrians and probably won’t be until the end of the year when the tracks are connected from the bridge to mayor street

Isn’t the Carlton supposed be demolished and have it’s facade cut off and moved down the street? How come we never heard anything about the planning of a 4d theatre. P.S. what exactly is a 4d theatre? I’m very confused.

well all the furniature is gone as well as some of the internal walls. I thought maybe they were renovating too but what would be the point of that if it was to be domolished within the next year or two.

What’s the current status of the Dublin Central plan anyway? When can we expect a planning decision? I assume An Taisce have objected considering it’s a developement that can be seen from somewhere and will generate employment and revitalize a derelict area. They generally don’t approve of such ungodly things.

they’ve taken the windows out of the royal Dublin. and there is some kind of crane like aparatus at the back of the site. There’s scafolding up all over the site. Perhaps it’s being demolished in advance of planning permission for the new building. There would be no point in refurbishing the hotel at this stage in the day

think it’s 2010 with the first event taking place in 2011, but by the looks of things, it may finish before that.

Last time i checked the GPO is set to become a museum dedicated to the rising in 2016. I think that is a very fitting use of the building

Oh come on now we have our fair share of urban slums here too in what is rapidly becoming a welfare society of 2 tiers, the super rich elite class and the ‘slum dogs’ to coin your phrase.

Irish ‘slums’ have heating, electricity, a front door etc, Middle eastern slums are tin huts.

Also freedom is a very all encompassing word don’t you think?, we should trademark that word. I’m sure the people in UAE have had enough of hypocritical westerners telling them of ‘freedom’ meanwhile we show how greedy and corrupt we are with our unbridled greed, bailouts, economic collapse, creation of a welfare state and the top greedy exec’s and ceo’s resigning in droves with their millions. As the late great george carlin once said of western society, Your free, free to make s(((y small decisions like what cigarettes you can buy, what color car you can have, what magazine you can read, but beneath it all your still a slave to corporate capitalism, one with little to no power in the real decision making which runs your life. Freedom my arse..

Spoken like a true hippie, if you feel like your a slave to greedy corporations, try living in Dubai where greedy corporations literaly have slaves working on building sites for almost no money. Also Women are property and cannot vote, homosexuals get the death penalty, sex outside of marriage is a federal crime (14 years in prison) and inmagrants are not protected under the law and suffer intimidation by police. Alas I don’t think that is a country that we should look up to in any respect.

17 years of boom…. in dubai they build the burj tower, in dublin they build a large spike protruging out of the ground….never have anyone tell you we irish lack ambition..

the workers who built Burj Dubai and all of their other towers are baisically slave labour. That’s how they can build so quickly and with so little regard for site safety or what they demolish along the way. Have you been to Dubai recently? have you seen the shanty towns? the slums that surround the city, the UAE Govt. would prefere you didn’t see them. I’d rather live in a country with no highrises than a country with no freedom
