well they’re doing something in that hole in the ground next to it so I’d imagine it’ll eventually be built, but not in it’s orgional format, which was more impressive than Belfast’s Victoria Square. The Facade of the Carlton was supposed to be a keeper from the origional plans, it’s all kinda up in the air at the moment.

RE: the Carlton, I think they have permission for it without the most interesting bit (the viewing platform). And the Grande entrence has been reduced to just a few metres wide, other than that the project seems to be a bit stalled. Although there are a few buildres and some scaffolding doing something in a giant hole in the ground where it’s supposed to go, but the Carlto building itself remains.

Crosbie said he needed to sell all apartments for 1m each to break even. There were 150 apartments planned plus 500 sqm of offices plus rooftop restaurant plus presumably retail at ground level. So does that mean he expected that it would cost 150m to build the 120m tower? Is that about right?

😮 that’s like €1.25m per metre height of the building(not including foundations) and it is fairly slender in design, I’d imagine that’s a fairly hefty price tag, especially given the recent fall in construction costs. Although of course he’d want to be making a profit.

I wonder if the price of steel beams has declined recently also.

The origional plan was really good. I know that it goes against the DCC developement plan but at the same time, maybe they need to get a better plan. Afterall the western side of Upper O’Connell street is awful. The sooner Dublin bus HQ is gone the better. The sooner Dr. Quirkey’s is gone, the better, the sooner the old North Dublin county council offices are gone, the better, the royal Dublin hotel is gone(thank the lord). The Dublin central schem done all these things and added a new public amenity “the sky park”. the whole developement reminded me of Victoria Square in Belfast which is amazing by the way. Now I fear this scheme will retire to the unbuilt Ireland section. So sad that we’re so backwards 🙁

It’ll be a bit of a monolith when it’s all done. The NCC is the only signiature building in the area really. And nothing over 45m really

Does Cork City Council run this scheme? if they can’t even keep the website running, how can they possibly organise a new bridge, stadium, light rail line and office/residential/retail area?

Google is moving it’s offices across the street to the new Montevetro tower in Grand Canal Dock, Dublin. For those who don’t know the developement, it’s literally beside a dart station and I mean the front door is less than 10 metres from the station. Good luck competing with that!

I agree that Dublin Bus needs to perhaps consider crossing of the City’s many other bridges. The worst example of this is the 83 which comes from Finglas via Church St but instead of crossing the Bridge and on to wine Tavern Street, it turns onto the quays crosses O’Connell Bridge and turns back around in almost the same direction it came from and out to Kimage. This adds at least 20 mins to the journey

But I am still in favour of the Bus Gate because even if Dublin Bus spread their routes out. College Green would still be the best route for most of their bus services to take. I wonder what they’re planning to do when BXD starts constrution. They can hardly share road space, can they?

I was at a consultation of DIT societies yesterday in Aungier Street regarding the new campus. The debate now is focusing on what goes where in the student hub, and what the old listed buildings should be used for. It seems the larger societies will each have their own office.

The Issue of installing a cinema and a broadcasting centre for radio and television was also discussed.

There was a moment of controversy when the talk turned to the location of the student bar and the 4 people representing the Islam soc. up and walked out.

old newspaper cutting of Smithfield (April ’97) . . . before redevelopment.

    Interesting caption!

The way I remember it, apart from the monthly horse fair, the fruit & veg market illustrated was just a spill-out from the market sheds and stores along the west side of Smithfield and was mostly a Saturday morning thing.

But, even with this limited use, and accepting that there may have been an architectural deficit, little urban enclosure, and no towering gas braziers, the space ‘worked’!

It can’t be rocket science to just stick a open-air market into Smithfield at weekends and just see what happens!

The Meeting House Square market in Temple Bar is fine if you don’t mind paying €4.50 for a loaf of bread, but it too small and too arty to really satisfy. The Marlay Park and Peoples’ Park, DunLaoghaire markets have their charms but are too far out to make a contribution to the city, and are equally arty and over-priced, IMO.

Is there any reason why a city the size of Dublin couldn’t have half a dozen decent unpretentious open air markets within the city centre area, enlivening dead spaces and drawing people into the ghost areas of the city centre?

Why would Smithfield and Newmarket not be the obvious places to start?

jasus! wasteland or not, I prefere it the way it is now. Judging by the picture, it was an absolute kip

Certainly, it would appear to be a far more impressive structure than the James Joyce bridge, which continues to suffer from lack of maintenance and a sense of being overblown for the job it has to do.

wow so a 48 meter high suspension bridge will actually be the tallest and most dominant feature in the area. It’s a shame really that there’s no buildings to rival it. It must be lonely at the top.

yes I believe it will be the tallest when It’s finished(2012) just overtaking the Obel in Belfast(2010). For a while there, it looked like it was going to be the Watchtower. It still might be if the application for change of use is accepted.

Well don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of this building per say but a break in continuous 6 story offices would be nice. Surely they don’t need 32 floors. Could they not settle for 28 or 24 maybe? Aqua Vetro will be the same size
