ParticipantWhat about starting school earlier like in Germany – I remember going to school for 7.30 over there and finishing at noon-ish and thought nothing of it. Then again we got a train to school so we didn’t add to the congestion. 😀
With so many families with both parents working I’m not sure it would work here although most employers are more flexible these day. So people could start work after dropping the kids off. So rush hour would start earlier but more spread out!

ParticipantI might be wrong but I do remember something about the owner of this building refusing to open it up. Even after some lobbying which is a shame because it would be a great attraction. Having a meal up there would be amazing.

ParticipantTo the untrained eye it certainly isn’t an eyesore and Dublin has a lot worse.
Its a pity tourists aren’t allowed up it. The view from the top must be amazing. It would make up for not being able to climb the spire.

ParticipantI’m beginning to think its got nothing to do with O’Connell St being incomplete, sure they knew this when the planned the event but to do with fear it might somehow be hijacked by may day protesters turning it into a riot of some sort. Security paranoia in other words.

ParticipantWhy?

ParticipantGreat pics Graham. I’m down that part of the city the odd time but its so hard to see the changes as its so conjested at the moment. Great detail. Roll on the completion day when ever that is!

ParticipantOh my god – I can’t believe this. I raised this question on the O’Connell St thread once the concert was announced and if I could foresee the problem surly the organisers could?
If the Beeb don’t go ahead with it surely RTE who partnered the Beeb on this should continue with it else where in Ireland.
If its not one fiasco with this country its another and I just hope this isn’t another one.

ParticipantTrue and its relatively high density too. So not as bad as I first thought.

ParticipantOk, I thought it was in the park, a Castleknock friend told me there were houses going into the park but I didn’t believe her until I saw the Irish Times article yesterday and it said they were going to be built on the “edge of” the park. I took that as being inside edge.

ParticipantDressing mutton up as lamb? I can just imagine the half arsed job that will be the result. The only way forward with this monstrosity is take a wreaking ball to it.
Phibsboro is in dire need of something decent here.
Any pics of the proposal?

ParticipantIn the park as far as I understand it but I could be wrong.

ParticipantGraham,
Point taken about the shadow on Dame St. and to an international audience Westmorland St, O’Connell Bridge and street are more recognisable I suppose.
Diaspora,
Agree with you on both points.

ParticipantGood point JJ. Maybe instead of looking at how much the final bill has risen since the beginning, we should see if it is value for money? I think it is unfair to compare it to the new Australian transcontinental railway, which cost the same but isn’t comparing like with like, but we should compare it with other European cities projects and apparently it is roughly the same price per km although I haven’t seen any proof of this.
Even if it is roughly the same price as a European versions are we getting value for money? Is the Luas really going to have the impact need to help reduce congestion in Dublin? Is it going to get people out of their cars? Could we be investing the same cash more wisely? Would we have been better to invest more in commuter services from more outlining areas that don’t have bus services? Should we have taken a longer view and started a metro system with a greater capacity? The Luas lines will be busy from day one and will be hailed as a success, some commuters who use the bus now might have a faster alternative but I really don’t think we got value for money.
I think things are moving in the right direction, Iarnród Éireann has come up with the most forward thinking proposals put forward since the inception of the DART and the port tunnel will hopefully remove the HGV traffic from the city centre. These measures plus taxing company car parking as a benefit in kind in the city centre, if the government ever grows the balls to confront its civil servants on this, will do more to relieve traffic congestion than Luas ever will.
All that said I can’t wait to use it. It looks the business!

ParticipantIt’ll be great for the Odean punters, just stumble down a couple of steps and onto the last tram home.
No doubt a lot of people will make it their first stop too.
blue
ParticipantOn bridges, does anyone know what stage Calatrava’s second liffey crossing is at?
I’m really looking forward to it, I think it will be a great addition and really help traffic flow.

ParticipantLike other anti-social behaviour, boredom is mainly the root cause.
More needs to be provided for kids and teenagers. There are more golf courses than playgrounds in Ireland which says a lot. Start with building playgrounds and skateparks.

ParticipantI agree with you, variety is the spice of life after all and we don’t want a carbon copy of Oxford St or any other English high street. However Harvey Nicks is hardly on every street corner in the UK and we already have Clearys, Eason and Pennys on this street so I don’t think it would end up a carbon copy. I just want to see the street restored to its former glory and if that means a large English department store leading the way I have no problems with that.
The entrance of UK retailers into the Irish market can only be seen as positive, offering the consumer more choice and VARIETY. The much-berated Jervis St Centre is a fine example of this and also how a shopping centre should be run. Irish shopping centres where second rate, in my opinion, until arrival of competition.
What will probably happen is a new shopping centre will eventually be built on the Carlton cinema site and this will have the necessary draw to get people into the north end of the street and in turn hopefully raise the quality of the surrounding establishments.
