ParticipantAs far as I know, a pedestrian bridge is to be installed there – you can see the gap in the boardwalk where it is going.
It’s mentioned here: http://www.dublincity.ie/planning/Draft_ContibutionScheme03.pdf

ParticipantI won’t hear a bad word said about O’Connell Bridge House! The first post in this thread has two pictures for comparison:

ParticipantSarcasm? It’s hard to tell…

ParticipantIt’s easy enough to call a building a load of crap without seeing it. Any chance of a photomontage so we can judge for ourselves?
Andrew Duffy
ParticipantI think the top floors are offices; they just weren’t occupied at the time of the photos. Can you see the exit signs lit up in them in the second photo d_d_dallas posted?
Andrew Duffy
ParticipantYes, you are right. The other part of the site is still awaiting a DCC decision.
Andrew Duffy
ParticipantNo. I’m reluctant to join an organisation that has its steering committee make snide remarks on Internet bulletin boards; however I think IÉ’s plan is the only realistic way this city will ever get a quality rail system, and the dearth of PR for it is astounding.
Andrew Duffy
ParticipantI must have forgotten to update this – this was approved by the council in July and is currently under appeal (06D208365). The decision must be due soon.
Andrew Duffy
ParticipantIt still has to get through the inevitable appeal, and then there is no guarantee that it will be built – full permission exists for office towers at Tara St. Station and Sir John Rogerson’s Quay with no sign of them being started.
Andrew Duffy
ParticipantThis has been approved by Dublin City Council; it is an absolute certainty that it will be appealed against.

ParticipantI’ve been working on a schematic map of the Dublin Rail Plan for a few days; it’s not on the extendthedart site (yet):

Any comments, corrections are welcome, but I won’t add any new stations to it unless they are definitely going ahead.

ParticipantSince the Sunday Times article has gone into its paid archive, can anyone remember what the actual height of the chimney is? I assume the 220 feet is an AOD height to the top of the lift shaft from the planning application, or just plain wrong.
The online versions of the relevant planning applications (1799/95 and 2616/97) are not very helpful.

ParticipantStephenC – Are you thinking of Bridge St?
Devin – Have a look here:
http://www.dublincity.ie/services/booklets/brdfoot.pdf
This suggests that the dual carriageway on Bridgefoot St. is to be turned back into a single carriageway as part of the redevelopment of the flats.

ParticipantI’d say O’Connell Bridge House was the development that paved the way for Liberty Hall and Hawkins House and the subsequent floor area/plot ratio limit that meant Dublin never got any highrises of good or bad quality. I suspect most would have been bad, however.

ParticipantWhat part is bullshit, brother? The inevitable failure of the Western Rail Corridor, or the inevitable cost overrun and poor suitability to task of the Airport Metro? Both seem certain to me. If you can provide an example from anywhere in the developed world of a railway similar to the Western Rail Corridor in population along the whole route that is operating at break-even or low subsidy I would be amazed. If such a line exists and doesn’t have its traffic massively skewed to one or two short commuter routes I’d be even more amazed. And you need only try to carry a suitcase from Heathrow on the tube to see how naive it is to build a tram line as the only rail connection to Dublin Airport.
Andrew Duffy
ParticipantPlatform 11 wants useable rail services on existing lines and new service on lines for which an obvious need exists, as do I. If a huge lump of money is invested in the Western Rail Corridor, the poor return on investment will ensure that no more money is invested in railways outside of Dublin for another fifty years. If the airport metro goes ahead, it’s inevitable final cost of about €5bn, combined with the ongoing subsidy and poor suitability to its task (think of the tube line to Heathrow), will ensure that no more investment is made in railways in Dublin until oil finally runs out in a hundred years.

Europes largest shopping centre will soon open in DundrumI seriously doubt it. It doesn’t even look like being the biggest in Dublin.

ParticipantIt drives me mad. What is the legal postion? Does the council sue the idiots who dig up the roads and fail to repair them?
Any bets on how soon the plaza on O’Connell Street will be destroyed? Henry St. took about six months.Andrew Duffy
ParticipantFingal County Hall (Bucholz McEvoy) might be a good one.
