ParticipantI think that is the Riverside Gateway development, designed by Tom Philips and Associates and financed by Fordmount Properties. There was supposed to be a fifteen-storey tower, but I think it was reduced in planning (although the lift shaft under construction is about ten storeys, so that might be it).
I agree with Paul though; I can’t see any beauty in the building.Andrew Duffy

Not much there, I’m afraid.

ParticipantThe second Calatrava bridge will be up at Macken Street; I can’t remember who won the commission for the pedestrian bridge being built at the moment.
Edit: Damnit – I remembered the designer of the other pedestrian bridge, at Custom House Quay (Brian O’Halloran & Associates), but not the one at Eden Quay. Maybe it’s a DCC project?

ParticipantThat’s quite annoying, actually. Maybe it’s the Carlisle Peir building somewhere else.

ParticipantThe new Cusack was first to be built and has a shorter roof section for cost reasons, the Canal End and Hogan were build next and have the same size roof, with transparent sections in the South-facing Canal End for sunlight. I don’t think the roof of the Cusack Stand can be extended to match the others.

ParticipantIt looks exactly the same as Spencer Dock. Is Murray O’Laoire turning into Scott Tallon & Walker?

ParticipantTrams are also bound by speed limits (incidentally, how are the spped limits on dedicated stretches like the Harcourt Street line or, more interestingly, the Naas Road, indicated?) and have an incomparably better braking ability than a train.

ParticipantIt will make Dublin look more like a European capital – not a reason in itself to push a head with a project. While I think it’s essential to extend the Green Line to meet the Red Line, (on O’Connell Street would be nice), the other link in this seems odd – there is a bridge due for construction this year linking Cardiff Lane to the other side of the river, specifically designed for light rail and road traffic, yet this plan proposes another bridge, so close to the east link that to allow a ship through would require both to be opened at once, cutting off all access between the two sides of the docks?
My preference is for the Interconnector and Dawson St., etc., tram line to be built first, then tripling/quadrupling and resignalling (no particular preference for electrification, but it’s nice) of the Northern and Kildare Lines. When that’s done, we could look at either building a new line to the Airport and Swords, either from the Northern line, or from the Maynooth line, which would serve Ballymun as well. If the Maynooth line is chosen, we could eventually extend it through Broadstone, tunnel to Ranelagh, relay the Harcourt St. line and have Seamus’ Metro. I’ve no attachment to a 5’3″ gauge, btw, but in that case there’d be no choice.Andrew Duffy
ParticipantThe Hill is being rebuilt at the moment, to half height. I don’t think there’s enough room to build a full stand, given that the pitch had to be rotated by about 15 degrees to fit the new Canal End in – remember that the West side of the old hill was only about 5 rows deep. It’s not a bad design though – the open end lets in light, but since it’s not facing South there’s much less chance of a team playing in to the sun.

ParticipantThe fountain on Wolfe Tone Quay has been running for a couple of months. The park there is also getting done up, and the railings repainted. Perhaps something to do with the brand new tram line running beside it?

‘Skyscraper’ hotel to overlook Westlife singer’s lavish home
SLIGO is to have its first skyscraper hotel soaring 15 storeys high.
Future guests at the hotel could enjoy a bird’s eye view of the home of Westlife star, Shane Filan.
The 144-bedroomed, 15-storey Queen Maeve Hotel with an underground car park is to be located just north of the Carraroe roundabout, two miles south of Sligo town.
It has been granted planning permission by Sligo County Council, subject to stringent planning conditions.
Included in the conditions is the payment of €0.5m for the provision of a sewerage and water supply services and footpaths.
Situated just off the same roundabout is the palatial home of Westlife’s Shane Filan and his wife Gillian, complete with stables and garages for Shane’s extensive car collection.
The new hotel will also tower over a nearby state-of-the-art lighting emporium, Clifford Electrical, the owners of which have been some of the main objectors to the development.
Other objectors included the Carraroe Development Committee, An Taisce and the National Roads’ Authority.
Meanwhile, a new €100m tourism project has been proposed for Co Longford.
The proposal for the development on 650 acres of land just outside Longford town includes plans for a new 200-bed hotel, a 27 acres golf course and more than 100 houses.
It received unanimous provisional approval from councillors when it was unveiled at the county council’s monthly meeting.
The development is to be built on the old Carrigglass estate, about three miles from Longford town.
If built, it will be the single biggest development of its kind in the region.
The plan includes the retention of the existing Carrigglass Manor, a listed building dating from 1776, which is to be turned into a small period hotel.
It also includes the retention of six gate houses, the redevelopment of stables, the construction of a 27-hole international standard golf course adjoining the 200-bed hotel, a club house and other related facilities.
More than 100 housing units are to be built in a village within the estate.

Oh, and the architect is Hugh Kelly of Murray O’Laoire:

ParticipantSo it’s the building called, wonderfully, “The Tower Building” – has the rebuilding been finished yet?
Edit – guess it has:

ParticipantActually, have a look here:
What’s the second building, the seven story one in the slightly unusual location? The image is called “gcqsmall.jpg”, suggesting Grand Canal Quay, but I don’t recognise it.

ParticipantThe gombeen man was originally a sort of rural loan shark, but the word is used to describe the sort of corrupt businessman with a finger in every pie one finds all over the countryside, and in large cities too.

ParticipantI had an overwhelming urge to reach into the screen and strangle that Clare quarry owner. Still, he made himself look like the fool, gombeen and liar that he is.
The Trim Castle competition story is bizarre, but I did miss the first half of the show. Were there any revelations about bribes being paid?Andrew Duffy
ParticipantDublin City generates over 40% of the wealth of this country, yet has about 25% of the population. Before you trot out the old shit about all the roads going to Dublin, try working out why that is – most of the traffic wants to go that way. Have a look at where interchanges are placed on these new roads; if they were built for the benefit of Dublin they’d interchange with the M50 and nothing else.

ParticipantThis is the tower in Grand Canal Basin; construction is due to start this summer I think:
