ParticipantIt`s not so much the extra “unforseen” expense which will now have to be factored into the annual Roads+Streets budget.
It`s really more about yet again we have a City Council struggling beneath the weight of its VERY extensive Senior Administrative and Professional branch while,YET AGAIN,Nobody appears to have any responsibility for any of this…….It just…well….kinda….happened..Y`know….sure what can we do about it……??Alek Smart
ParticipantPerhaps,he mused……It might have turned out better if the Spire of Light had been laid FLAT along the central median….
Alek Smart
ParticipantRight Peter,so I`ll go on……
Quote [Graham]
“The crane is enormous, though not quite the same height as that that erected the Spire originally. So that’s why so much of the Upper median was left as dead space!
[End]Well it was`nt all dead space cos Public Lighting had to make a somewhat rushed appearance there since last midweek in order to remove several lamp standards and a CCTV post……..Hmmmmm I can hear the City Manager now…….
“Well Pat,of course your City Management KNEW all along we`d need space to park the crane…it`s just that lamp standards are such…such…well…Permanent Structures like …you know..and thats why we erected them there…..Oh don`t worry it`s all fully budgeted for,why only last week I got the Chief Accountant to do a little inventive foreign exchange transaction in order to pay for the crane…..”
Anybody care to try a Ballpark figure for the couple of days “Action”…..? (and perhaps speculate on how much in the € the commercial rate will increase this year)
Hey…I`v just had a great idea ! How about registering The Spire as a commercial property and making a fortune from merchandising…Y`know…a stroll along Moore St with the oul wan`s shoutin….”Get de last of ur rubber spires now ladies” 😀
Oh …sorry…what do you mean we tried that..?….Jeez nobody tells the City Manager anything around here now !!!! 😮
Alek Smart
ParticipantGood oul Charlie…..I wonder is he anything to Teresa….??
I also wonder if anybody sent a postcard to Dublin Bus advising of the “Restrictions” especially as it may impact on Bus Services to Broke Park an the likes…
Mind U any Public Transport company that insists on putting ALL of it`s eggs in one narrow little basket deserves everything it gets in return !! 😮
BTW does this mean DCC are no longer describing the item as “Self-Cleaning”…?
Alek Smart
ParticipantPS……Still no light on the Spire…..
Alek Smart
ParticipantYes…I saw several “Suits” admiring the Dr Quirkeys Bayeux Tapestry yesterday so…..I suspect something similar might just be within the gift of Foreign Affairs !! 😀
Alek Smart
ParticipantHmmmmm….State of the art “Exhibition Space”.
Sounds all very nice enough but whats the beef content……The Rent Roll…?Anchor Tenant……Foreign Affairs…Mind you with the present advertising for the Multicultural Moore Street Mall on display I suppose one could say it already IS Foreign Affairs in there … 😮
Alek Smart
ParticipantStill no Lights on the Spire, squire

ParticipantGreat Thread,if only to underline my long held belief that nothing short of a total demobilization of Dublin City Council and all its works (Except the Parks Dept) will save the day.
The problem is essentially one of ACTUAL vs NOTIONAL responsibility.
Not one of the City Council`s assemblage of Senior Administrators and Engineering Professionals will have a single cent deducted from their wagepackets for authorising and presiding over sloppy, second rate and downright negligent work.In fact the time honoured established Civil Service dictum “Promote out of Harms way” will doubtlessly come along any day now.
I say bring on Mr Wallace and let him have a stab at it….after all “It`s a Beautiful Game” or at least it is to DCC`s executive branch !! :p

ParticipantGreat Stuff, but first let me say this……..Send a Transit Pick-Up with a few lads and a wheelbarrow full of tar n chippings to the Junction of Dorset St and Nth Frederick St.
When they finish tryin to level the playing pitch here they can then head for Suffolk St ,outside McCullough-Piggots and remove the wheelbarrowful of Tar and two Cones they dumped there on Tuesday…forgetting to tamp it down.
If Dublin City Council possess a Staff Member claiming to be a Chief Engineer of some sort, they should Immediately check out whatever oul certs he claims to have before setting him a few tests in DIY Theory and Practice.
The general state of the Capitals Roads and Streets is becoming very ramshackle indeed, perhaps the Spire`s lighting problems have soaked up the Roads and Streets Tar n Chippins Budget ?? 😮
As of Friday 25th….somebody in roads + traffic (small R small T) managed to find a wheelbarrow and spread another few shovelfulls of tar on the Dorset/Frederick Fissure, then they took themselves to Suffuck St and removed their cones….and ….still No lights atop the Spire of Light…..Thats all folks !!!!
Alek Smart
ParticipantThe Spire of Light is STILL in darkness….Has anybody noticed…?
Does anybody give a shytt….?
Rather typifies the entire City Admin really…Big Plans…..Big Talk…..NO finishing skills !Alek Smart
ParticipantWell Graham…..The GOOD news is that Bus Atha Cliath`s next major new trunk route the 141 ( Swords to Kenilworth Sq) will shortly be trundling out of it`s garage.
The original intention for this 10 minute headway route was for it to utilize Gardiner St as its cross-city aspect. However somebody appeared to take fright and as a result 12 additional buses per hour (6 each way) will be headin along O Connell St very soon.
There are plans afoot to construct a reviewing stand outside Dublin Bus HQ (Number 59) where senior company executives will review the fleet each day and from which a noon-day gun will be fired as well as the 23.30 Last Bus signal each night.
I understand the company`s provisions manager has been spotted browsing through the selection of Russian Army Officers clothing in the Georges St arcade in an attempt to put a little glamour into the process…. 😮
Not to worry,it`ll be grand when the O Connell St by-pass is finished…! 🙂

I wouldn’t normally approve of public vandalism, but these bins are deserving of it.Heck i might even throw on the al hoody myself and go down there with hurley in hand and make pieces of it.Lets make a night of it lads and destroy these monstosities.
Well Demo Man afore ye do that how about fixin the Light on toppa the Spire…..yes my people its STILL all blackness at the pointy end.
Although mind u they did manage to get the half-way light workin again……. 😉

ParticipantBackhanders Boys n Girls…..backhanders…….
Just give it a little time to settle and then take careful note of when and where the SENIOR DCC decision Makers n Shakers go for their holliers…….
Perhaps a change of Moteur,Monsieur…….?And to rub salt into the gaping wound….the sans culottes have to pay a FEE for the FREE bicyclettes too….
An Irish solution to an Irish problem eh……..A worlds first…Imagine a cure for Imbecility !!!! :pAlek Smart
ParticipantJust to reinforce Johnfp`s views on O Connell St`s general dishevellment, has anybody noticed how the much vaunted eternal Light atop the The Spire of Light has been extinguished since before St Patricks Day.
Interestingly the red Air Navigation Light has also been absent for that time, something which could well have proven hazardous for the VIP`s reviewing the Easter Commeration Parade should one or more of the Air Corp`s pilots become disorientated from all the Loop de Looping etc.
All the oul DCC talk about the Spire`s Lighting System being of the super long life variety appears to have been quietly forgotten……..quelle surprise !!

ParticipantWould that Dublin`s Citizens could rustle up enough interest to march upon Civic Offices and torch the bloody place….!
Civic Information my arse….and I make little apology for reverting to ctesiphon like language.Whilst many appear to believe Dublin is at the cutting edge of things urban,I am of the opinion that the City is currently at the edge of a very deep and wide crevasse into which it is about to fall.
Mind you,I did notice that at least one mould was recently broken as DCC Cleansing Operatives were to be regularly spotted pulling down the very hi-definition Pre-Ard Fheis posters in O Connell St.
It was quite funny actually to witness the Sinn Fein bill posters moving thru the Main St putting up,while being closely followed by two DCC staff pulling down the rather well crafted pictures of G Adams and ML Mc Donald.
Ah Joxer…the times has changed so dey haz…. 😮
In the meantime DCC really does need to get a handle on its Inner City Regeneration policies as a recent late night stroll through Thomas St/ Cork St left me aghast at the level of deriliction visible in NEW unoccupied apartment developments…..

ParticipantInteresting bit of Ass-Covering codology goin on presently at Princes St/O Connell St.
Somebody has obviously costed the amount of Garda man-hours which has to be spent here at peak times. The result is a flurry of digging and setting in of some tactile edging at each “side” of the entrance to Princes St.
Added to this is yet another Stainless Steel Pole or perhaps two in anticipation of some additional signalling to augment the present ped crossing array.
Slight oversight on the original comprehensive safety-audited IAP design no doubt.
Nothing to be concerned about…Nobody killed,Nobody Dismissed,Nobody responsible…..However…I wonder if the City Manager,Asst City Manager,Director of Traffic and Chief Engineer have considered the possible negative effects of yet another Pole on the Reversing Artic which appears there each evening at 18.45 ish…..
If anybody wishes to see what long commercials or PSV`s can do to traffic signal poles (Ad nauseum) then have a peep at Leeson St/Pembroke St junction where another new pole has just been erected following yet another flattening job…..Wonder what was recorded on the CCTV unit specially installed to keep watch on this very pole…….?? 😮

ParticipantI have now discovered yet another reason for Minister Cullen and his Governments concerns at the dilution of the “Democratic Process”……It is presently the topic of some open-air theatrical drama over in Dartmouth Square where the “Old Style” of Irish Entreprenur is packing them in to his new Tile Showroom….apparently some enterprising Archiseekers are seeking a bulk discount !!!! 🙂
Alek Smart
ParticipantSometimes I find myself pondering upon the relative merits or demerits of a benevolent dictatorship to replace the somewhat threadbare “Democratic Process” which we are continually told to be grateful for.
Just a few weeks ago we had Martin Cullen,a Minister of this Parish, effectively running a skewer through the prospects of a Dublin Transportation Authority.
This towering collusus of Political Willpower told us that the first recommendation of the DTA Planning Group was being repudiated by the Government as it might be percieved by the Great Unwashed as “Undermining the Integrity of the Democratic Process”.That recommendation….??? Oh nothing more than the DTA seeking to establish a TRUE oversight role in terms of urban planning and transport…
Well I would suggest that Minister Cullen and the other members of this “Government” which he refers to,might well ask Mr MacNamara and his fellow “Proffessionals” around to Kildare St for Tea and Muffins followed by a detailed outline of the Governmental position on the “Integrity of the Democratic Process”
I would suspect an hour or so`s full and frank exchange of views should awaken Mr Mac and other Council Proffessionals to the dangers of being regarded for posterity as Philinistines, something which I feel sure they would be aghast at.
Of course it might also be neccessary for a Joint Government/DCC Fact Finding mission to meet with M.JC Decaux, who sounds suspiciously non-national and possibly resides somewhere exotic…or at least warm & dry.
Now lets see…….Martinique….? Mustique…..Put Aer Corps One on standby I`ll just go pack an overnight bag !!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

ParticipantWhats the betting the shelters will be the new Modern Standard ones now replacing the old Adshels throughout Dublin.
Probably the last part of the O Connell St Bus Stop Action Plan ?
The provision of some form of shelter is welcome but I remain curious as to what design criteria will be applied thereto…..
Lets do a group Breath Holding Hug…ready ?…..Breathe In and Hold…..:o 😮 😮 😮 😮
