    Can I just point out that Frankfurt had a new terminal built about three years ago for a cost of €14 million. The contractors did however manage to over spend by about €500,000 (how alarming, NOT!) What is so insane about this picture?!?! Frankfurt gets new terminal, it costs €14 million. Cork gets new terminal, it costs €150 million. Dublin gets new terminal, it costs … If Germany can build a large terminal for peanuts, we could have a decent airport in every city in Ireland. And I mean an airport, not just a landing strip and a galvanise shed (i.e. Galway and Waterford). How do we manage to spend so much when it could cost so little?

    The City Hall has to get a mention too. I think it’s most beautiful at dusk, while it is still bright outside but the lights eluminate it and it’s refelection can be seen in the Lee.
    City Hall at Night.

    Thumbs Up Thanks for that information. I knew someone would give me something in time. Rocky Island…. and here’s me thinking that it was on Haulbowline Island (I knew I was spelling it wrong). Thanks again.

    One of my favourite of Cork buildings is UCC. But also the building that is presently occupied by Brown Thomas. Some of Cork’s newly built buildings are also on the favourite list. Maybe even the airport when it is built. It’s simple, but the roof makes it look elegant. And I realise that the last post to this forum (before lexington’s) was late last year, but I wasn’t registered then, so I’ll have my say now. 🙂

    Does no-body not care about my crematorium? Come on, someone out there must know at least a teeney weeney bit of information on it! I wont let the subject go that easily. And the idea of connecting all the shopping centres sounds so odd for Cork. It’s like a giant step into the future or something. It’s so continental. :p

    I know we are all sick of looking at this picture, but what type of metal will the pillars be made out of in front of the airport. Everyone takes the piss out of the Spire because it’s so dirty. I hope this wont be the case in our ass smacking brand new terminal! 😀

    Oh my buddah, I love a sense of humour, but I am being totally serious. I really need some information on it and can’t get any on the web, I dont even know if I’m spelling the name of the island correctly! Oh, and there was one supposed to be built in Ovens a few years back (don’t even get me started on the ironic side of it), but the plans fell through. 🙁

    Thx securityman, I heard Dixons are keeping an eye on a Cork location, but I believe more of a city centre property, Acadamy St. or the Coal Quay perhaps? And for anyone in the know, what about the crematorium?? 😉

    A while back, someone posted a message about a crematorium being built on Howbouline island? Anyone got some updates on this? And securityman, any idea when Harvey Norman are due to open it’s doors to the public?? I expect it will create a huge amount of competion between both PC World and Soundstore.

    For a road to be classified as motorway a number of conditions must be fulfilled. The following conditions generally apply:

    Motorways must be accessed at junctions by slip roads off the sides of the main thorough-fare;
    Separate motorways are joined by link-roads at an interchange, the object of which is to allow traffic to change route without stopping or slowing significantly;
    Traffic lights are not permitted (except at toll booths and certain small interchanges);
    The start and end of a motorway must have signposted entry and exit points;
    Certain types of transport are banned, typically: pedestrians, bicycles, learner drivers, horses, agricultural vehicles, underpowered vehicles (e.g. small scooters, invalid carriages).
    In the UK and the Republic of Ireland there are further restrictions:

    The central reservation must remain unbroken (a noted exception being the Aston Expressway in Birmingham, which has none);
    Emergency phones must be provided at a regular distance;
    A ‘minimum speed limit’ may apply.

    All of these regulations is the reason that Ireland does not have more motorways. I have yet to see more then one emergency phone on the dual-carraigeways in the Cork area, and if some people drive any slower they’ll come to a standstill. They should be given the option to get out and walk or else just throw them into the side or a ditch…. they hold up all the traffic!

    Has anyone been to the shopping centre in Dungarvan? I went a few weeks back, just to see what it was like. I was so unimpressed it wasn’t even funny. The building is an architectural disaster, looks more like a big pre-fab rather then a shopping centre, and the shops ain’t great either. Small choice of stores, only a Dunnes and Sasha keeping the whole place together. 🙁

    I wish I too could say lexington, that I need a new suspension, but I haven’t got a car yet. Anyways, they’ve been saying that for ages about doing up the Dunnes on Patrick St. but I still don’t go in there, for the simple reason, it’s worse then the one in Ballyvolane. Well, almost anyway!

    Did I hear some pitter patter about a by-pass being built in Castlematyr. It would be a god send for the commuters to Little Island? Anyone got any details?

    It’s such a shame that Dunnes is the anchor tenant in Ballincollig, like there aren’t enough in Cork already. Do you have a last of the tenants that have secured or that are interested in opening in the shopping centre?

    I never knew that the CIE area on Horgans Quay was so big…. at most I would have said 10acres, 17 was at the other end of the line.
