Does anyone else think that the “Wooden Building” on Upper Exchange Street (re: Shane O’Toole’s article last week) is the coolest looking building built in Dublin in ages?

COOL!……but will it age well. Ah sure give it a coat of Ronseal once a year to keep out the dry-rot.

I think it looks very well. I’ve always liked wooden clad buildings anyway but this is a good one, much more interesting that the round on in the IFSC.

On reflection has’nt the west side of Temple Bar developed nicely. God only knows why AN Taisce were objecting in the first place. OK, the demolishment of the listed buildings along the quays beside Sunlight Chambers was very much questionable as well as the redevlopment of St.Mary’s Church; what is now the Viking centre, but overall the new infill schemes blend nicely with the existing buildings. The same could be said of all of Temple Bar.(The Green building with it’s industrial styled decorative motifs is ‘cool’ too and look at the great job done on Sunlight Chambers, this disneyesque jewel). An Taisce seems to object to every new development for the city but they are about as effective as a paper umbrella when it really matters. As for that arch in Fishamble Street which fell down, well again, so much fuss over nothing, when you consider that all it did was indicate the site of Handel’s ‘Musik Hall’ of the 18th century. The arch itself was’nt built until the 19th century if I’m not mistaken. There is no attraction about it either.

I think the wooden building has a bizarrely medieval feel – an arts and crafts revival crossed with the Lord of the Rings. Very very strange.

I managed to have a look around the Wooden Building yesterday and aside from it’s fairly conventional internal planning (even though the apartments are beautifully finished and some have the most stunning outlooks), I must say that it is a truly beautiful building. It’s dramatic, well crafted, individual and yet respectful of the surroundings… Some of the woodwork is incredible especially along the steps which lead up to the courtyard. I am truly inspired by this building (perhaps too much… my own ideas are starting to take a turn for the wooden-bit-stepping-outwards-as-it-ascends which is definitely not a good thing since it in no way fits with any context or reasoning… I just think it looks… well… cool!
