Hello,
As part as my final design project i am looking to generate forms for a building by analysing wind movement around my site which shall consist of high rise buildings (lookin into the different wind phenomenon which can occur in such instances etc…) I was wondering if anyone knows of good packages with which i can enter a 3d model and then simulate wind movement, in a similar way to a wind tunnel. I see ecotect has an ability to this, but i don’t think it can acomplish exactly what im after. I have seen a video of a program simulating wind around Fosters Swiss Re building, but i do not know what program was being used. Has anybody got any suggestions? It would be a great help if i could get my hands on such a program.
Cheers!

Try the Centre for Research in the Built Environment at cardiff university for advice, i attended a lecture there a couple of years ago, they were designing and developing programs for modelling wind paths and testing effects of new developments on the surrounding area when i visited a few years ago
http://www.cribe.uk.com/facilities/facilities.html
‘An Environmental Laboratory – equipped with a Wind Tunnel and an Artificial Sky and Heliodon (the most advanced of its kind in the UK). The Laboratory provides a unique facility for simulating wind and sun effects and is used for environmental scale modelling.’

Well the software i need is a CFD package (Computational Fluid Dynamics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_fluid_dynamics ). There are quite a few about, but the ones i have shortlisted are : Ansys CFX, Cosmosfloworks (addon for solidworks), EXA Powerflow, Fluent, Fluent Flowizard, and CFD Cadalyzer.

http://www.fluent.com/software/flowizard/index.htmThe fluent and powerflow programs look to be the best of the bunch imo. Im trying my hardest to obtain a copy of either of them, and if not i will try get access to the University of Nottingham facilities as they use Fluent for some of their courses… and also have a wind tunnel.
I have got a copy of Ansys CFX, but have yet to use it. I will start into that next week and see how it goes. It looks a complicated program and i reckon it will take a couple of weeks to get to grips with… but hopefully it will be worth it.Anyway, whenever i get stuck into this i’ll post my findings. Meanwhile i got an exam next week, which i need to study for.
