ParticipantCan anyone tell me when planning permission was introduced in Ireland (Dublin)? Before that, could anyone build whatever/whereever they liked?

Do you know, was it just a free for all before that?

Participantwasn’t there a council of gentlemen or something (by a different name), a council of landlords and other dignitaries that planned and raised finances for public projects and generally had to be consulted before doing anything.

InactiveLocal authorities existed before planning pernission but before local authorities, you had Grand Juries, which fulfilled the role you are describing.

A council of gentlemen sounds like more fun. Can I join?
Gentlemen they weren’t. Opinionated, pompous assed, landed gentry with about as much common sense as your average two year old. Not like your modern county council, of course.

What’s Stephenson’s time-old arguement about the Bank of Ireland – Gandon’s screen wall would never have been built without windows today?
Can just see him quill in hand battling with a CC planner over his beloved niches 🙂 - July 4, 2005 at 6:43 pm #757464
