What is Dublin’s tallest building at the moment? The Smithfield Tower and and the Guiness Storehouse both claim to pip Liberty Hall, but this article claims the George’s Quay tower is 62.5 meters tall. Coming in on the train it doesn’t appear that this tower can possibly be taller than Liberty Hall. Of course if the 96 meter tower at Sir John Rogerson’s quay is built it will be far taller than any other, but that is far from certain at the moment.

I think that the Storehouse and Smithfield Chiney both claim the tallest public viewing platform in the city, as Liberty Hall is private property. They’re definitely both shorter than Liberty Hall. The Storehouse is more visible due to its high site.

Sad is’nt it….. being able to count them all on one hand…….and that would go for the whole country.

The 96m tower on Rogersons Quay recently got the go-ahead from An Bord Pleanala. Even if Dunloe can’t come up with the money to develop it themselves, I believe your man who owns Zoe Developments is very keen on the site and might try to acquire the entire Dunloe company just to get his hands on it.

Hopefully the Tara Street building will go ahead too. There’s also provision for a 100m building behind the Point in the Docklands development plan, although I think that whole plan is a waste of valuable space down there (look at the crap they put in the IFSC extension), being far too conservative in nature.

As far as the rest of the country goes, County Hall in Cork is the country’s tallest building (due to be renovated shortly). The new 17 storey Clarion hotel in Limerick is the third tallest now. Thats about all I can think of.

Is there any easy way to find plans, models and heights of recent and upcoming buildings? For example, there is a very bulky tower nearing completion in the Blanchardstown Centre that I can hardly find mention of anywhere. The planning permission applications would seem to be the obvious place to look, but these are not readily available and hard to search. I’m not an architect, so forgive me if I’ve overlooked an obvious source.

I’m not an architect either, but I have an interest in it. I don’t know of any particular place where details can be got, but here’s a couple of links for different developments I found myself:

For the John Rogersons quay development:
      http://www.oms.ie/projects/projects.htm

And for the South Bank Road development (don’t know if this is happening or not):
      http://www.neills.de/06-south-ger.htm

The last one is in German, but it came up on a simple search on Yahoo. Since I speak a little German I can tell you it doesn’t say anything all that interesting about it.

The South Bank Street development looks interesting. It seems designed to compliment the Ringsend chimneys, but that might just be a coincidence. Any guesses at the price of that penthouse?
