Easily the best performance I have ever seen from Ireland. Well done to all concerned.

I also hope that Scotland come good again (next year) the Calcutta Cup belongs on the north side of Hadrians wall 😀

Not to worry FIN old boy, there’s more chance of our parliament coming in on time and on budget than Scotland doing anything in rugby or football.

Still, in football I think we’re creeping up the world table now……….only Ivanuatu, French Ghana and the Federation of Micronesia to overcome.

unfortunately true alan. bad result against wales a few weeks back. in both rugby and football.

In football, the Scottish game is overrun by third rate players from overseas at the end of their careers, stopping young Scots coming through. Until that’s resolved we’ll be at the butt end of world football.

Though to be fair I think we’ve now slipped past Haiti in the FIFA world rankings. Can’t think why?

Still, what a game for the Irish………even I recognised that and it’s amazing what success in sport can do for confidence.

alan d, re soccer, it always seems to me that the scottish teams do ok in europe, its only the national side that’s shite, which i don’t understand.

Twickenham looks like a pretty impressive stadium. I find it interesting the way it is referred to as ‘Fortress Twickenham’.

That’s because Celtic have Larsson, notjim………….. Oh, and two englishmen called Sutton and Thomson and a Welsh bloke called Hartson and of course an Irish manager.
Not available for the national side.

Fortress Twickenham, eh Phil? What larks!

Guess this means Ireland are now world champions?

i found euro-sports highlights to be rather one-sided. it seems it was a major shock that a nation from the six-nations championship had the gall to go there and win. of course there was reference to 1966(they seem to mention that at every available time even though different sports ) and the fact scotland beat england after that particular tournament win. de-facto world champions i think was the quote. and re scotland with the big 2 having lots of foreigners the scottish national side is reduced to picking from the others and the various english teams.

Alan, I was just thinking of it in terms of the analogy between a stadium and a fortress. There is definitely similarities in terms of the way in which they are both quite dominating features within the urban landscape.

Ach Phil, let’s just gloat a little while longer before bringing architecture into the discussion…….if you’ll allow me as a Celt to share just a tiny bit of your limelight:)

but alan d, how come the irish team plays better than the national league because our good player play in england, but the scots teams play worse because the national league players aren’t scottish? doesn’t having a good national league encourage good players?

i am ignorant on this topic myself, soccer to me is just what comes between racing results.

Having never placed a bet in my life notjim we’re like two innocents out in the world.

Scotland has a mediocre national league with only two teams of note : Celtic and the blue noses from the west side of the city. In an effort to keep up the other teams draft in refugees from third teams in Europe.

Phil, don’t worry about Paul….Diaspora talks rubbish all they time and gets away with it….one rogue thread won’t spoil the site.
