Just passing the Volkswagen/Mercedes Distributors’ place on the Naas Road got me thinking. The tower with the spinning Mercedes ‘three pointed star’ on top has been there as long as I can remember. It looks sort of art-deco, does anyone know the background to this building? I believe they assembled Volkswagens in it for many years, but that’s all I know.

Here’s a poor view of the building murphaph describes

Always reminds me of Paul Bonatz’s wonderful 1927 Stuttgart Railway Station.

Bonatz studied under Theodor Fischer and although not a member of the nazi party, did a lot of work on infrastructure projects for the Third Reich. Very interesting guy if you are interested in the whole bauhaus/neo classical/modernist debate.

Although there are of course many other buildings with that particular sign rotating on them (Europa Center Berlin probably most famous), Stuttgart is the home of them all!
