Hello I hope that someone might be able to help me out. I am working on an upcoming ‘Ireland and India’ edition of the magazine History Ireland. One of our articles is about the history of Indian cuisine in Ireland and we would love to include a photo of the infamous Taj Mahal restaurant opposite the Dental Hospital. I was full sure it would be easy enough to track down such a photo, but not so. I’ve seen threads on here about the architecture of Lincoln Place and thought I may as well ask and try my luck. Any help would be much appreciated.
Kate
Was the Taj Mahal not on the corner of Lincoln Place and Clare Street facing where the NGI extension is now?
I think McCollough Mulvin did the stripped down gallery [with the awful lead flashing where the shopfront used to be] on that site, they would probably have photos in their files of the original frontage complete with the legendary Taj Mahal signage.
I know I have photos too, but it could take a month to find them
Thanks so much Gunter, that’s where it was alright and if that is the firm who worked on it I’ll drop them a line, in the meantime if, on the off chance, you do find one of your own photos please let me know. I can be contacted at k.omalley@ria.ie
Many thanks.
That restaurant will always be famous because of the contestant on Larry Gogan’s ‘Just a Minute’ quiz who answered “At the end of Nassau St”, when asked where the Taj Mahal was. And yes I know it was actually at the end of Sth. Leinster St. but it’s an easy mistake.
