“The Bay
A look at the port and docklands in Dublin and how the opening of the Dublin Port tunnel will help the busy area.
Wednesday RTÉ ONE 7.30pm “This should be an interesting programme and should help clarify a lot of the detail surrounding a lot of projects. What annoys me about so many urban planning & environment programmes are the 730pm slot they are put into directly competing with the show with the highest viewing figures thereby depriving these highly informative and well researched pieces of local television from a mainstream audience. 🙁

InactiveThat programme looks like it will be good. Also there is a new book coming out in November on the Docklands:

InactiveDefinitely looks like one worth looking at when it is launched, I have long suspected that Frank McDonalds popularity has it made it very difficult to launch a commercially viable book on Dublin planning issues and I look forward to getting a new perspective as much as I look forward to reading his next installment.
The Bay starts in 5 minutes.

InactiveIt wasn’t quite what I thought it would be and its architectural content was very limited I thought, it was good on Dublin Port I thought though.

Participant……Peter Coyne said it will be one of the best waterfronts in Europe.
Mind you with the purchase of the Jeanie Johnson and the plans to have a river taxi …things are looking good.
But a bit of signature architecture is badly needed in the docks . Something that can be used for branding, marketing and identification. The pyramid roofs of the mini Canary Wharf are always being used. A scheme that was designed in the late 80’s. Now that says a lot. - May 19, 2005 at 12:59 pm #755918

Because people who watch soaps in the majority would not watch a show like this – whereas Soap avoiders (like myself) tend to prefer shows like this. So it makes sense to cater for people who would watch the show – theres only a few hours of prime airtime so at least its on at a reasonable time and not buried after 11 at night

Participanti thought it was a greart programme. although i dissagree with the docklands being one of the most beautiful waterfronts when its finished ,in my opinion most of the buildings are very uniform and flat , whereas most new waterfronts in cities such as london and sydney have higher buildings and bolder designs etc….
it will be a great relif to get all the trucks out of the dockalands area, ITS AN EYESORE to see trucks trundling through the communtiy.
god bless the M50!!!

Yes this series will be quite varied in content – that was the second instalment on Wednesday, interestingly narrated by Brenda Fricker – you wouldn’t attribute that voice to her at all!
What do people make of the Dublin Port HQ? Can’t find a decent picture of it, but it’s always been one of my favourite buildings in Dublin – got a simple structural form that’s very appealing.
Just a pity about the all-singing white windows that went in recently.. - May 23, 2005 at 10:38 am #755922

ParticipantThere was an interesting aerial photo of the docks (grand canal basin) in the property section of the irish times a few weeks ago, its all coming along now, very large area, noticably low rise though.
