ParticipantHas anybody noticed those atrocious new buildings on Temple Bar Square on what used to be the vacant site (or makeshift beer garden as it became) next to the Quays pub? They are built to look like two separate builidngs and are the absolute worst kind of pastiche imaginable; historically inaccuarate as well as offensive to the eye. What happened to the Architectural framework? Temple Bar, despite its problems has become something of a showpiece for contemporary Irish architecture. What kind of retarded planning system do we have in ths country that would let these hideous things be built? The mind boggles…

ParticipantIt had dissappointed me also as I saw the thing take shape many weeks ago. A case of the Quays Oirish bar interior kit out going out of control.

ParticipantCould it be something to do with the winding up of TBP? Have the Corpo – sorry City Council – got more of a say in planning now?

InactiveAt least the window frames are made of wood [or is that an example of cronying pastiche too ?]

ParticipantApart from the bay window, I don’t think they’re too bad, yis should have a look at some of the new apartments on Merchants road, Galway. Their grossness fail me.

Participantim glad theree is a forum like this that highlights atrocious pieces of work such as this. its just a pity that very little is/can be done to avoid it. Perhaps it illustrates what Temple Bar has become, an urban theme park designed for tourists.

ParticipantYou know of course that the interior is probably going to be twee Irish pub as this is an extension to the Quays Bar.

ParticipantAfter so many years now of the developement boom you would have thought that design standards would have come on. But this new building isn’t alone in bad taste. The very large new apartment complex on Dorset St. isn’t worth a second glance, unfortunate considering the prominance of the street.

ParticipantCan anyone else remember the Galway Quays before it became an Irish Pub, it was really great. There is a little corner left to remind you by the front enterance.

ParticipantUntil such time as domestic architecture grows up and leaves the cosy vic/ed nostalgia behind I’m afraid we will see a lot more of this kind of thing – the shock of the new and all that.
