ParticipantDid anyone see that programme on RTE One last night about Nelson’s Pillar, O’Connell St, and the Spike etc…???
Almost nothing in the programme about the spike, or the search for a replacement (Ana Livia barely got a metion too)…
Great footage of a bustling O’Connell St prior to the bombing. Odd to see just how little Dublin’s appearance has changed in that general area – well except for the plastic golden arches signs, etc…
Interesting to note that the destruction of the pillar kinda signalled the descent of O’Connell St into the *lovely* vision it is today.

ParticipantThe lack of coverage of the Spire was noticable, indeed it’s footage was only shot in the past few days as the O’ Cll Bridge lanterns were evident.
The wide shots of the street from the early-mid 20th century were fantastic.
I could watch them all day. - March 19, 2003 at 8:01 pm #725322

ParticipantThere’s something about that footage that really makes it all look so good.

ParticipantI missed that programme ……..I kept up the tradition of being angerly drunkenly Irish……shameful too I know…..but I think it’s in our genes however. It took years and generations to form…it will take years and generations to filter out. Oh to be civilized!

ParticipantOr maybe like me you’ll be murdered with a hangover from Saturday and Sunday nights… that’s progress for ya!
