Anyone go to the talk given by Tadao Ando at the RDS on Sunday? Despite the fact that he was likeable, a little mischievous and has a hairstyle not unlike Mike Flowers, I didn’t find it very impressive or particularly thought provoking. Maybe the slightly oppressive heat of the venue didn’t help. He did recount a story of when he gave Bono a tour of his church of Light in Osaka and the great leather trousered one broke into Amazing Grace which in turn caused the congregation to start crying. I thought that this reminiscence might in turn cause the congregation at the RDS to start puking. That would have been good. Bonzo, in his introduction to the great architect, spoke of leaving some good buildings behind in Dublin for future generations (or something like that). He could start by NOT replacing the Clarence Hotel’s lovely back elevation on Essex Street with wavy glass and putting a fucking Space, sorry “Viking” ship on the roof.

it was pretty clear on the letter that came with the tickets that this would be the case. it did kind of disrupt the flow, but he still came across ok i thought…

Which raises the question, Where was this advertised? I like to think I keep fairly up to date on events such as this, but this one passed me by entirely until the Irish Times of the day before and its breathless awe (based on what, exactly?). Was it only aimed at the fur-coat-no-knickers brigade?

i got an email when it was first announced from the RIAI

Did you send it out in an e-mail, Paul, or was it just on the Events page? I don’t recall seeing it in an e-mail, though perhaps my memory is failing me. I do sometimes check the Events page, but infrequently, relying more on the announcements in e-mail and on the forums.
Was the only other avenue the RIAI? What about us non-architects?

It was an RIAI and IMMA event, priority would probably be given to members, associates and affiliates. the tickets were gone in the first day as i understand it.

Thanks sw. I guess I just got the wrong impression from the Irish Times Magazine (surprise surprise) when it drooled all over the event in the run up.

apparently there were 11,000 people at one of his lectures in taipei (i think). can you imagine filling the point for a lecture by an architect? hopefully this will be the first of many lectures of this type and size.

I agree with A. Luas that the talk was underwhelming. The translaters flat delivery of Ando Sans sardonic tales provided a few laughs but there was little by way of insight. Bono’s declaration that we were “in the presence of greatness” set the tone, and the ‘great’ architect matched the ‘great’ singers ability to be self-deprecatingly grandiose!?! The question remains, why was Tadao ‘Rocky’ Ando in Dublin? Was he here only to talk?
