Does anyone know why this project seems to have stalled again?
Just as it seemed so tantalisingly close to finishing the place is deserted again and the oppressive hoardings, which have being there for years (well it feels that way), are still up!!
If I understand correctly this is part of HARP, so is it financed by DCC? and the money has run out for this year or something?
At least finish the paving around the building so we can have some space back!

There is a problem with the license and beer storage I believe….

Thanks Paul.
I wonder are they planning on using the crypt as the beer store? Chilly!!
Just from looking trough the fence on the site it looks like the Church will sit on the square without being railed off. Quiet a big bit of paved area extending north of the Church too, which will no doubt be used for tables and chairs.

This is a private sector project and the reason for the hold up is very simple.
The building was held by an oscure minority evangelical church for decades, when they sold the building they inserted an ‘immoral uses’ clause into the sale.
To the best of my knowledge that clause has not been successfully defeated through the Courts yet.

I read an interview with the owners and apperently there is a tunnel across Mary St and into some property they own at the other side. They plan on using this area for storage etc.!!! Dunno which of the building it is though!!

Good god, what seems like the longest construction project in history rolls on. It seems to be approaching the end though. However I am very disappointed by the paving being done outside. There are now about 4 different styles and colours of paving at and around this site and it looks a mess. Why a uniform scheme couldnt have been put in place for Henry St, Mary St, the Church environs and Wolfe Tone Park I dont know, Still it will be good to the see the project eventuallly conpleted. The building itself has been beautifully cleaned up. Not sure about the golden staircase but its not dreadful either….a feature. Hopefully it will be a stimulus to more restaurants and bars for the area. Mary Street is an ideal location for this to happen.

I suppose we should be glad that it has started at all how many projects in Dublin have got the green light and still havent even begun… tara St being a perfect example…as if the quality of architecture in Tara st wasnt bad enought (Apollo house et al) we also have to put up with near dereliction on the corner until they get around to building the tower there

Walking past the site on Saturday I noticed a sign indicating DCC will be permanently extinguishing the right of way around this site. I presume this means the right of traffic. If this is the case and a pedestrianised area is to be created it will be great news. It will give an opportunity for the retail units opposite to be upgraded or reconverted into restaurant use, just as John Fitzgerald was calling for recently. The plans were on display at the DCC Sheriff St offices – did anyone hear any more.

I’d say it possibly relates to the curtilage of the structure onto Mary St which would be sufficient to accomodate a good number of tables & chairs; this is also both necessary and welcome. I was involved in some in depth analysis of peak time footfall patterns on Henry St and Mary St late last year, independent findings were that the footfall figures at the end of the Jervis centre bear no relation to those on Henry St or any point west of the entrance to the Jervis Centre.
The central retail core as outlined in fig. 4 of chapter 8 of the development plan lists the retail core in 2011 as stretching as far as Greek St to the West along a central axis being Mary’s Abbey. To call 95% of the area west of Capel St part of a retail core makes no sense in 2005, however between the Markets area plan and the nature of much of the building stock in this area it does look possible that this could be well advanced by 2011 if consumption holds up.
The removal of disparate clutter within the curtillage of St Mary’s Church that has constituted a detrimnental visual blockage at an important focal point and replacement of the land use with a visually attractive service use is most welcome.

I havent seen the ROW to be extinguished sigh but am I wrong in thinking that if the council wishes to extinuish a ROW that doesnt only relate to traffic but pedestrians too. can anyone clarify this for me?

As far as I know, this only applys to vehicular traffic passing on that very small bit of Mary Street between Jervis Street and Wolfe Tone Street, which looks like it will be paved over. Hardly any cars ever went this way so will have very little bearing on anybody.

This builkding is finally cmplete and open for business. From a quick glance ….it looks the business in side. Overt attentative staff make it difficult to have a good mosey around. The paving out the front gives way to the bombsite of Mary Street…no effort made to integrate it into to the Henry Street scheme. The dvelopers have put in permission to ereect a wall and railings around the whole church which will unfortunately remove it from its surrounding and ruin the potential (if anyone was proactive enough) to create a new public space at this point. Hopefully the CC think so. The way is then open to rremove traffic permanently from this small stretch (currently the case I think) unify the paving scheme and convert the dull retail units opposite into much needed restaurants or cafes. The perfect little spot!
