ParticipantAs if progress in this country wasn’t slow enough…
I read yesterday in the awful News of the World that The Spike or whatever you may call it will be completed “by Christmas” (the weekend before Christmas day they speculate). Really, planning delays granted, will this ever be built?? – and if the granite plaza is not constructed simultaneously, will the result not be shabby? I can’t see this being completed by Christmas.
On a more positive note, I see a Fast food joint beside the Savoy has closed. Others please follow suit.

ParticipantNo surprise there at all.. It was meant to go up three years ago!

ParticipantHmmm. I’m far from being an expert on this, but is it possible to begin construction on a project whilst there are still outstanding planning objections. I would have presumed that since the foundations are extremely advanced, the spike itself would follow to it’s planned schedule (and therefore be fully erect by Christmas, if that’s the intended date).
Seerski, are you certain these objections will cause further delays, or are you (like me) speculating??

ParticipantThey have a sign up saying that the delay is because of a strike at the french steel mill.

ParticipantApparently, even though the Spike has passed the design stages and is nearing completion, the City Council/engineers are still trying to figure out how to put the thing up!

ParticipantI do look forward to the giant metal thingy, although I don’t look forward to seeing the first retard’s name scrawled on the base….

ParticipantYeah – how are they going to stop vandals ruining it if you can walk right up and touch it?

ParticipantStainless steel should be easy enough to clean though. That was one of the advantages of the design.
The Waste Management dept of city council do actually remove graffiti and litter! If gobshites grafitti the spike then call them. I would hope that most people would care enough to at least make a phone call. - October 22, 2002 at 5:42 pm #721270

ParticipantI thought of the threat of vandalism too in the guise of graffitti and the threat of joyriders ploughing a car into it’s base. Could possibly happen given that when anything new is erected it is always subjected to wanton vandalism by the great unwashed and unenlightened. See the way new sapling trees always seem to have their necks snapped by the little morons.
