The much debated school of music.
Supposed to be built and up and running last year. The poster child for PPP educational projects. Cover of Indo yesterday: Was supposed to be ~€16m – now likely to cost ~€100m!!! Government haemorraging hundreds of thousands a month renting out temporary accommodation.
Future uncertain, unlikely to be there for Southern Capital’s 2005 celebrations. But what do people think of Murray O’Laoire’s actual design, and PPP’s & architecture in general?

don’t like the stencilled side panelling. looks like the bastard child of the opera house and the gate theatre, if heroin was involved somewhere in the coinception process.
its too obvious and cliched. murray o’laoire have yet to shock me with anything interesting.nice render though.
BTW, they say 60 million euro on their website as the budget

spotted that too! Trust the Indo to give a well researched story.

its a mess, looks like a schitzophrenic piecemeal of 30 different buildings. the massing is woeful and the composition of materials looks like it was done by an 8 year old girl who looked at a mecanoo book for an hour.
yes i know its very easy to criticise, but they are making it a lot easier by proposing filth like this. -

does anyone know if it was the cork office that designed it? surely by walking outside their door and looking around they’d be forced o come up with something better than this

Very hard lads, don’t you think?
Looks like an interesting design to me.

Looking at the site it’s going on – this will be great. Cork needs something – anything interesting at this stage. I think I’m being seduced by the night time rendering though. The design is a bit “mixed” but I think it looks a damn sight better than some of the other educational projects coming up of late.
Bear in mind it’s a city centre school building. -

it might sound a bit harsh but surely they can see that the building is as ugly as sin. some people can create beautiful objects out of fractured and disjointed forms but obviously murray o laoire cannot.
im sure they were going for some thing half-spectacular as a landmark in the city and that is fine. but if you cannot compose a building of this nature dont go down that route. im sure they could have created something just as memorable, in perhaps a more restrained but sophisticated way.
i would have a sneaking suspicion that their concept was to express the harmony(composition) of disparate notes(different forms/materials) coming together as in music.
im sorry but in my opinion they have gotten somewhat lost.the fact that it will cost 80-100 million euro to build it makes me doubt the validity of the design even more.

i dont think rubbishing other proposals is the point alan d.
i just think that a firm as big and experienced as m o’l should be able to do better. their scheme seems to lack cohesion, any sort of distinctive style, and smacks generally of a lack of effort. if you’d like to see my doodles you’re welcome to it, but for the money and exposure that murray o’laoire are getting for this project, they really should have done better.

EL ARCHITINO will slap anything, anywhere.
EL ARCHITINO is of the opinion that the murray o laoire building is a masterpiece. it bears a striking resembelance to EL ARCHITINO’s own scheme for a music school in co letrim beside the river shannon. except EL ARCHITINO predicted that it would cost 450 million euro and it actually cost 100,000 euro.
well done murray o laoire from your mentor: EL ARCHITINO

el architino, once again you astonish me with your amazing works. to be able to capture the power and majesty of a thought with a ball point. magnifico. your penmanship renders the renders of murray o’laoire wasteful and incoherent. the decisive cuts and projections truly embodythe magic of music

pure genius el architino, i wouldnt complain about the quality of that one..
alan i would be more than happy to place my work up for critique if it wasnt for the fact i would loose my anonymity in what is a small architectural community in dublin. that is a valuable part of these discussion forums as it allows truely honest opinions to be aired. thats what my previous posts were, i honestly believe that this project is not worthy of its presige or price tag. i feel it is symbolic of a once, design-based office becoming more commercial and less bothered with making architecture of integrity. i would fully agree with sw101 that the building gives off a distinct odour of apathy.
i also do not think it is unfair to express what i feel is a valid opinion on a discussion forum which explicitly asked for peoples views on the quality of the building based on these renders.
having said this i have seen many buildings which look far better than the renders which preceeded them, but i think this one is fighting a loosing battle. -

my biggest issue with this building is that it is not site-specific. the renders highlight this further when it looks best when its pitch dark and all the street lights are broken. and in the daytime render it looks lost in a sea of grey blocks which represent nothing. i’d appeal to m o’l to give honest impressions of this buildings placement, and not try to make it appear isolated and pristine.
cork deserves better, with such good work being done when the mindset is right, i feel such an exposed and important sight it is wasteful to throw up any old slightly wonky fashionable tat

EL ARCHITINO’s irish office is located on the banks of the river poddle. the views are beautiful but EL ARCHITINO finds it difficult to keep his white suede suit clean whilst getting to and from the office.
EL ARCHITINO will not divulge the exact address as he is wary of people stealing his ideas in a manner akin to the film mission impossible. EL ARCHITINO will however, consider your request b.ray. -

ugly as sin is a definite architectural criticism. if the word beautiful can be applied to contrasting material, textures, compositions as a whole, then ugly can be used to mean the opposite.
ugly
Function: adjective
Definition: unattractive
Synonyms: animal, appalling, awful, bad-looking, beast, deformed, disfigured, dog, dogface, foul, frightful, grisly, gross, grotesque, grungy, haglike, hard-featured, hideous, homely, horrid, ill-favored, loathsome, misshapen, monstrous, pig, plain, plug, repelling, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, unbeautiful, uncomely, uninviting, unlovely, unprepossessing, unseemly, unsightly
Concept: uglinessmy particualar favourites are uninviting and unappealling. please don’t try to give english lessons here alan, we can all be speak good.
this building is not as good as it could be or should be. do you honestly believe there was a decent investment of time, energy, and creative enthusiasm in the creation of this scheme. ignoring the office it came from, or its importance as an urban structure, do you feel it could be better? or is this the pinnacle of architectural expression in your mind?
i also like dogface and haglike.

So… um… we don’t like the School so?!?
Still – it’ll prob not go ahead in this expensive design now – tough times etc… In their desperation to appease Southern voters (strike action taking place today) – the government will prob push through a more (ala Metro) streamlined facility – so we can all look forward to a nice Hawkins House prefab rendition.

A whole flotilla of salt and pepper shakers lining the lee.
Planning was granted recently for the site opposite the opera house, at the end of the christy ring bridge, for a 5 and 6 story apartment block. Muck. Damn you Keating.

Is that the red brick stylie one that was “inspired” by East Village, Douglas and the Georgian terrace further up the Quay? What is being built where the orange building is (see below). It’s not THAT bad – it could be alot worse (i.e. nearly every single apartment development the length of the Dublin Quays)
Or the monstrous silver thing adjacent in this picture – I thought that got rejected.
-

Inspired my ass. They designed the east village for god sake! self-inspiration? odd. whats the think on the watergold building at the end of the east village? its the yellow stone one with green glass and a funny roof line.
wow. never saw that silver thingy. uuugly. That look worked well on the siemens building, possibly because of its industrial and dockland location, and it proximity to the station, but its not too nice down by the river.
-
October 7, 2003 at 9:57 am #736419d_d_dallasParticipant
Watergold is probably the most schizofrenic (unintentionally I imagine) building in Cork. A complete mess. It would have been a really good opportunity to provide some unity to lands around (which all will be developed) and help start off the possibility of a new street side progressing back to the main village. Instead they’ve merely accentuated Douglas’ reputation as “little america”!!! Known as the Addam’s Family House in some local circles.
That said – the apartments inside are supposed to be fabulous – the view on either side discounted!

that silver thing is an older application which was refused because of two existing buildings on the quayside which were to be demolished, a new application has been submitted (or is close to), which retains these two existing buildings.
-
October 7, 2003 at 3:19 pm #736422d_d_dallasParticipant
Hmmm – I have a bad feeling about the future of Lavitt’s quay and Popes Qy – there are too many application refusals because of the proposed demolitions of older not really noteworthy buildings – so the City Council propose to retain the facades and developments go ahead at the exact same scale with these ludicrous out of scale facades. Example: Owen O’Callaghan and TCH buildings going on opposite side – these huge blocks reaching six stories dwarfing some two story facade. I’m all in favour of retention – but the line has to be drawn somewhere. In this case it really would be better to clear the site, or not proceed at all.
