Re-emerging Dublin

I just want to point out that seeing Dublin city recently in the glorious spring sunshine and taking an abstract view of the city, one can really see and appreciate all the development and rejuvenation that has occured within the last few years;……that there is a conscious force there behind the developments, carving and shaping the city.
The city I remember just 10 years ago contained acres of dereliction, stagnation and poverty and has been dramatically changed for the better.
Well done to all involved ….John Fitzgerald, Jim Barret & Co. Looking at Temple Bar, Smithfield, North King Street, The Docklands (even though the docklands is somewhat disappointing) and even the suburbs etc…..there is a great drive to improve urban living in Dublin…..and this can only set a precedent and benchmark for the rest of the country…..which it already has no doubt.
Thanks to our European brethren too. -

There is a wonderful drive and a feeling of optimisim in the city now, esp in the CC which is great.
But the vast majority of all development that has taken place over the past decade has not been the fruits of the CC’s efforts or any other public body, but simply on the back of commercial interests. And wheras the quality of building has much improved, they’ve only happened out of fashion and companies’s desire to have prestige pemises, rather than stringent planning laws etc.
We can see even now on O’ Cll St, where there is a major effort underway to improve the quality of premises/retailers on the st by the CC, but there’s absolutely no commercial interest in the area and so nothing is happening, and nothing will happen for the forseeable future. Unfortunatly. -

i believe the site beside the carlton is being opened through to the new building going up at the corner of moore street and parnell street. this is to give people a reason to travel farther up o’connell street (past henry street, where the majority of people turn off now) and activate upper o’connell street to the point where its safer, better trafficked, and therefore more attractive to businesses. hopefully an effort will be made to refurbish or rebuild those awful curtain-walled buildings that characterise that area of the city at the moment. who owns and runs the abbey at the moment? i think real efforts need to be made to open it up to the street and give the junction of parnell and o’connell street a bit of life also.
it must also be said that the spike has opened up peoples eyes to the possibilities and latent grandeur of o’connell street, as has been noted on this forum already, and for this the authorities must be commended.
