I got an e-mail about this today and I thought it might be of interest here.

The Irish Landscape Institute is pleased to announce the first date of 2009’s public lectures, commencing the series with a talk on the design of landscape for civic wellbeing. ‘Free Landscape’ is the theme of this year’s lecture series, drawing on paradoxical perceptions of landscape as both an abundant, pervasive natural resource and an exploited, scarce commodity.

Within the urban matrix, green landscape is at its most scarce. Park footprints face competition amidst property valued too highly to accommodate function at ground-level only. As the global population has reached an important milestone—more than half of all humanity now resides in a city—it falls to design professionals to consider the impacts of urban environment on the mental and physical health of its citizens and on civil society at large. To this end, Anna Bengtsson will be sharing some research on the impacts of landscape design and planning on human health. Topics on the agenda include:

A study of effects of distances to green spaces on health

A study of health effects of designed landscapes on the young and the elderly

      Healing Gardens; design and use

Alnarp Rehabilitation Garden; a healing garden for persons suffering from depression and burn out syndrome.

      Accessibility and usability

”Alnarp Rehabilitation Garden; a healing garden for persons suffering from depression and burn out syndrome”

A perfect marriage of timing and concept!

. . . when I was depressed in the 80s, I used to go to the Garden of Rememberence in Parnell Square.

The attraction was that it had seats, there would be no one else there and, as it was such a depressing place, being miserable there seemed somehow to be appropriate. Often this faint synergy was just enough to raise a slight flicker in the battery again.

Unfortunately, since moving to the southside, I find that it’s just a little bit too far away.

      . . . maybe I should go on Tuesday . . . . see if I can be of any assistance.
