      Hi!

I came across the Portlaw Tannery, in Co.Waterford during a research on disused buildings, for a adaptive reuse project I am doing for a final yr Thesis.

I am just wondering if anyone knows anything about surveys and CAD plans for this building,if they may exist? or who actually owns it at the moment??

From what I can find out it still lies derelict even though there have been plans for its restoration in the past.

Can anyone help me on this one?:)

RTE did a documentary on Portlaw and the tannery a couple of years ago (maybe even last year) – it was series following the social effects on various towns follwoing the closure of big businesses/employers and I think each episode was from a different decade 1950s up to present.

May be worth trying to dig out that programme to get some background info?

FWIW, that was the Waterford equivalent of Arklow’s Irish Fertilizers (IFI), lots of State funds being pumped into a dog. It was Irish Leathers originally, then went through various guises, several people tried to re-invigorate it and I think it ended up being bought by the Lannens of Irish Hide & Skin Ltd. Don’t know if they still own it, it’s worth a phonecall.
