ParticipantI was wondering whether there was ever any discussion of doing something with the old power plant at Pigeon House.
I wouldn’t suggest turning it into another modern art gallery but it seems inevitable that the Docklands redevelopment will probably keep moving up the river as far as Poolbeg.
Though the smell from the nearby water treatment plant might make any apartment development there less desirable.
Here’s a pic of it, which doesn’t really do justice to its size:

ParticipantThe Pigeon House power station and the Hotel have been the subject of several proposals for a science museum etc. over the past decade. The Hotel was once used as an ‘innovation centre’ after it was somewhat renovated in the early nineties. It is now in bad repair once more.
The Hotel has stood on the South Wall since the late eighteenth century.
The power station and area in front of the hotel was used as a set for the not so good dragon flick of a few years back ‘Reign of Fire’.
I studied it for a master’s thesis project a few years ago, and managed to wrangle a visit. Apparently most projects flounder under the cost and practicalities of such a large renovation project. The buildings and the site itself have a very interesting history and should be preserved, but it would be far better if they weren’t derelict.
